With all due respect to people questioning Stoll's contract, his production was right in line with Chris Thorburn and Dwight King last season - two guys who made marginally more than he will this year, without the legal and public substance abuse baggage and the question marks surrounding his future. Stoll is an UFA irl - where he winds up, and whether he winds up at all is still a question mark.

We're happy to give him another chance - without judgement - and take the risk that no irl NHL franchise follows suit - in which case we're saddled with a small, dead cap hit.

There's really nothing contestable about the terms that HowYaDrouin and I came to here.

We appreciate HYD's time and the amount of dialogue it took surrounding certain players to get these deals done. We feel he was both stiff in negotiations where necessary as well as fair - striking a good balance in the end.

Want to stress that I was by no means questioning the contract at all. HYD and I have had terrific negotiations in the past and believe him to be very, very fair. I'm applauding you on the great deal, that's all.

Fair enough. Noticed that these things can tend to take on a life of their own in this thread, and intended to answer it from our perspective nip it in the bud before it snowballed - pardon the puns.

The New York Islanders would like to place F Ryan Malone on waivers, with the intent to terminate his contract - he has retired, and was not 35 years of age at the time his contract was signed.

Ryan Malone is on unconditional ($125) waivers, which if he clears (and he no doubt will) allows for mutual termination of his contract.

Malone, who'd been playing in Hartford (AHL), told NYR yesterday he wanted to pack it in. So NYR put him on unconditional waivers today.

Can i do this with setoguchi ?

Edit: if he signs in europe ? / is not under nhl contract next year ?

Not quite sure, tbh. I know he's a free agent next season IRL, but I'm not sure if him signing overseas voids your current contract. Would be nice to get clarification on this, though. I signed Viktor Tikhonov, hoping that he signs with an NHL team this off-season. If not, I'd also like to know that if he signs in the KHL, would my contract be terminated as well.

Very good to know. Thanks Nail!

In other news, there are reports out of Carolina that the Canes have completed another trade. Pending league approval, this would be GM Monty's 4th trade in the last 3 days. The Hurricanes, who were having issues with their cap going into next season, have reportedly made the necessary changes to not only ice a competitive team, but to also ice an exciting team.

Stay tuned for news throughout the day.

I can only pray lol. My worst signing. I had no idea he had declined so much. Although if another team takes a chance on him and he miraculously regains his scoring i wouldnt complain, as unlikely as that may be.

It makes for a tough decision for me going forward. Buy him out or hope he signs overseas/ gets a last chance by an nhl team.

If i buy him out and a month later he signs in europe im guessing i still have him on my books? (Question for Nail)

I inquired about a European player and was cautioned that these contracts are subject to the Wade Redden rule.

Unlike the other players in question - you signed Tikhonov knowing that he was playing in Europe - whereas players like Malone (or players going to Europe) have NHL contracts that have been terminated.

The problem with exempting contracts like the one you signed with Tikhonov is that if there's no consequence to that signing, what it creates is a rush to sign all the quality players in Europe, and a whole lot of hollow NHL contracts that may or may not wind up applying. So off I go to sign handfuls of SEL and KHLers.

I personally don't believe your signing qualifies for termination - at least that's now the information I received when I inquired.

I think oldnews' assessment is accurate - if I sign Ilya Kovalchuk to a deal now, he should stay on my books as he didn't sign in Europe during the deal.

Rumours circling on Long Island suggest that fans (if there are any remaining) will have three new deals to debate on discussion boards and talk radio in the coming days....

A Hall of Fame forward's rights are rumoured to be headed to a contender, while in a separate deal, it's believed a veteran defenseman is headed to New York. It's also believed that a pair of forwards on contending teams may be changing places at the conclusion of the playoffs.

New York Islanders management declined to elaborate any further, in an attempt to avoid their tendency to engage in combative banter with particular local media.

This was actually my understanding on this as well, just wanted clarification. Thankfully Panarin signed, as I would have been hooped! The belief (hopefully) is that Tikhonov is waiting until July 1st to sign, the Yotes still have RFA rights until then. Here's hoping!

I think those are good calculated risks that make sense - but if they were exempt and their contracts could be terminated if they don't wind up in the NHL, the implication would create a mess (and a huge workload for Nail and agents), with GMs signing all the talent in Europe to gain potential rights without consequence.

My interest was in a young player/prospect (Nakyva) - who can't be drafted - with the grey area being whether they can be assigned to the AHL (as irl). The point was moot as Nail beat me to the punch regardless - but I think it makes sense that their cap hit applies regardless, otherwise in a league with no minor's cap, there is also no consequence to a signing like that (additionally so if not subject to waivers).
