GM Mike Vanderhoek (Calgary Flames)

The Lowdown:

  • Took over the 25th placed team in 2014 -> 4th place finish in 2015

I haven't been around long enough to track the progress GMs have made with their teams or analyze many deals that have taken place (aside from the few in the past week or so since joining CFL) but this seems awfully damn impressive Mike.

We have a trade to announce...

To NYI: Jay Bouwmeester, Jordan Subban

To CAR: Chris Thorburn, NYI 2015 5th Round Pick

The Isles welcome Jay and Jordan to our club - and we're thrilled to acquire them.

Jay had an off-season in terms of production and owns a substantial contract moving forward - but we feel he can rebound in that sense, and regardless, he's a quality veteran that will fill a very important role on our club and we are very happy to add him to our blueline, He also held a NTC - and we appreciate his wlllingness to come to Long Island and thank him for waiving to join our club.

Jordan is a young prospect that we feel possesses exceptional hockey intelligence, perhaps the single most important factor in our opinion in a young players' potential - we're very excited about his future.

We'd like to thank GM Monty for a swift and productive negotiation - he needed to move cap and acquired a very solid bang for your buck forward in Thorburn, while clearing a spot on his roster. It looks like he completed a very solid subsequent move acquiring an exceptional blueliner in Stralman, and an impressive handful of picks.

We have a trade to announce...

To CGY: Jaromir Jagr

To NYI: CGY 2016 5th Round Pick

We thank future Hall of Fame forward Jaromir Jagr for his contributions to NYI and hope he winds up signing with the new holder of his rights - he understandably wanted an opportunity to contend at this stage of his career - we feel he is well positioned to do so in Calgary, a franchise in the extremely competent hands of GM Mike V. We'd like to thank MIke V and wish him the best in both his team building and GM of the Year nomination.

After I receive word tomorrow on a pending trade awaiting to be approved by the league, I will immediately post a End of the Year State of the Union, addressing the franchise as a whole.

In the meantime the Carolina Hurricanes would first like to thank Jay Bouwmeester, Cam Fowler, Jordan Subban, and pending UFA Brad Boyes for their contributions to the Hurricanes organization.

Jay Bouwmeester is a true veteran and leader on the backend to any organization. With the subsequent moves the Hurricanes have made recently, we felt it was both in Jay's best interest and the organizations to move forward. With the Islanders, a truly historic franchise with terrific new management in place, Jay Bouwmeester will not only be a #1 defenseman there, but he will be able to help mentor a young group as they move forward. And with Jordan Subban joining him on the backend in the next few years, I wish the two of them all the best.

As for the return in that trade, I am happy to have Chris Thorburn join the team. A real character guy, Thorburn had 133 pool points last year and we look forward to his leadership and physical presence.

Brad Boyes was a pending UFA and while he added 207 pool points last season for a relatively affordable amount, our team is getting younger and, unfortunately, Boyes no longer saw a place for himself in Carolina.

Cam Fowler was, by far, the most difficult player to move. Since joining the Hurricanes back in early February, I can say that there is no other player I have received inquiries about more than Cam. His affordable contract, his age, and the team he plays for IRL made him an incredibly hot commodity. Having received offers on him for 4 months and repeatedly saying he wasn't for sale, talks began to heat up over the last week. Leading up to the eventual trade, as many as 5 teams were in negotiations for Fowler's services. He is a consistent player (221 pool points in the regular season alone last year) who will be sorely missed.

In return for Fowler, I am happy to welcome Anton Stralman (260 pool points last season), as well as receiving the following picks in the upcoming 2015 draft: 17th overall, 46th overall, and 47th overall. Currently through 5 rounds, the Hurricanes currently hold 9 draft picks. IRL, Stralman plays alongside Hedman on the top pair in Tampa. Having a guy like him on our team while freeing up cap is very important going forward.

Lastly, I want to thank lethunder, Mike Vanderhoek, and oldnews for friendly negotiations that also came together nicely.

I'm looking to hire a much more active AGM, more of a co-GM type of thing as I don't have time to run my team in this league how I'd like to run it.. though I'd like to stay on in the league if I can't find someone to help out I may have to bow out. If anyone is interested let me know.

Announcement:

Ottawa has relieved C&G of his AGM duties

Hiring:

Ottawa has hired Gally to be our AGM

With this hiring we hope to have the chance to improve the depth of our squad, life has gotten in the way of us having our depth into something that we need it to be. Big Nations Capital welcome to Gally!

Welcome back Gally, hope you don't mind the moves I've made with your old team!

I can speak from experience, this guy is a terrible AGM.

The New York Islanders still have considerable cap space available.

We remain willing to take on a contract - not looking to accept any further cap dump type deals (ie, declining or relatively unproductive player accompanied by an alternative asset as compensation), but we are open to offers involving a reasonably productive top 6 forward (relative to their salary) from a team that needs to move cap.

Pending league approval on a trade, the Carolina Hurricanes will have $3.525M available for a remaining roster spot. While I would prefer to go the free agency route, any teams looking to rebuild and get younger should give me a shout.

Till then!

I don't get this one. Wouldn't mind knowing what the GMs intentions were. Not that it's crazy lopsided, just seems odd to give a talent of that calibre up for strictly futures.
