The real reason Johansen won’t get paid

Recommended Posts

I had to see who wrote the article, and of course it's Cox.

His suggestion is to pay more players less than 2 mill, and more players closer to 10 mill, effectively getting rid of the "middle class" players. That is a horrible idea. While some players are grossly overpaid (Clarkson, Bolland, etc.) there is a gradient in skill in the league and just because you're not Crosby, doesn't mean you should get paid the same as a 3rd/4th liner.

With regards to the star players, I think they are overpaid to. Why should Crosby get 12 million? He may be the best player on earth right now, but what difference does it make to his life to make 12 mill compared to 10 mill or, heaven forbid, only a 7 figure salary.

The real reason that the too many average players are getting 2-4 million is because the top players are paid too much. This drives the salary of every player up because the scale is shifted up. The solution isn't to create a huge gulf in salaries where it jumps from 2 million to 10 million with few players in between, but to bring the salaries of the top players back down so everyone is paid reasonably.

Because his career could end at any point leaving him brain damaged for the rest of his life. The risk in contact sports is so high that players should try to get what they are worth.

Johansen put up more goals than Hall/Eberle who is making much more money at the same age. 3 million a year for 2 years is an insult for 33 goals, i don't care how old you are.

2 years 5 million per is reasonable bridge contract for a player of Johansen's calibre and age

What the hell did I just read in that article? Yes, guys like Clarkson, Bolland, and Mitchell are overpaid, but to suggest that that middle class NHLers should make $2 million or less is assinine.

You know what happens when teams offer 2 mil or less to a proven middle six forward like a Chris Higgins? He packs he stuff and goes to the KHL.

Cox doesn't have much choice but to posit such a derpworthy theory.

If he had a whiff of sense, he'd have to come to terms with the reality that his "upper class" Leafs are a joke to the rest of the hockey world. Treating and paying Phaneuf and Kessel as if they're more important than their entire middle class is a large part of what makes the Leafs such a sad ass hockey team.

Mere middle class guys like Macarthur have been undervalued and don't matter enough to that franchise - and therefore, they've been and remained a crapty hockey team.

Proposing that players like that should make a few million at best so that the "elite" can get laughable paydays is just dumb - but consider the source.

Johansen on the other hand, regardless of dumb class analogies, is an actual franchise player in the making - something the Leafs probably can't remember dealing with... since the Sundin era.

The reason he hasn't gotten paid yet is cause GMs are too scared to take advantage of the CBA and sign him to an offer sheet. Every GM in the league would be fine paying him 5 mill a season on a short term deal but CBJ is greedy and expects a budding superstar to play for scraps. They know no one will sign him to an offer sheet, yet are prepared to match "any offer" in the unlikely event it happens. What does this tell you?

The real reason why the middle class players salary is so high is because they are more available on the open market.

The high-end players seem to be too low in salary is because of their long term contracts. The super star players with their 8 + year contracts are so long by the time they are half way through the middle class salary is starting to catch up.

Just the fact that these mid level hockey players are actually reaching the open market while their upper level counterparts are locked up long term with the team they were drafted with, creates an higher demand for them. Hence them being overpaid. For example, Clarkson, kulimen, vrbata, lecavaleir.
