Welcome back to another exciting season of Canucks Hockey. The Magic Number Chart returns for it's 6th season, and unlike previous seasons, the format of the Chart remains the same. I re-labelled some of the Column heads to make it easier to understand each row's significance.

What is the Magic Number Chart?

The Magic Number Chart is essentially a standings chart that outlines the progress of each team throughout the regular season. The Magic Number itself is a formulated number that explains the Win/Loss differential required to clinch a post-season birth. Given the clinching formula is based on a divisional structure and with the implementation of a wild card, the formula will be based on the top 3 teams per division. The remaining 2 teams will be decided based on the highest point total, followed by the NHL's standard tiebreaker rules.

Table Codes:

Poss: Points Possible

Pace: Point Pace

Rem: Points Remaning to be won

Magic #: Formulated Number

P/M: Plus/Minus in terms of separation between teams. (Formula to be added later)

Change: The Magic Number Change between update intrevals

Playoff: Playoff Contention Status

X/Y/Z/P: Playoff/Division/Converence/Preisdent's Trophy Contention points needed

Playoff Opponent: Playoff Opponent once decided.

Explanation of Pace Formula:

The pace formula is very simple. It's Total Points / Games Played * 82 (Total Games in Season).

By evaluating the chart, if you look under the 'Pace' section of the Chart, all you have to do is look at the 9th placed team's Pace, and then you know what the point total is to clinch a spot.

The Pace formula is based on the most common output given the pace of a current team.

Of course there's always the potential for every team to go above that pace, but statistically speaking, the variation won't be more than 3-5 points up or down, so the pace is a safe assumption.

Since no one understands, I'll start posting the REAL clinching # which is based on the X/Y/Z/P columns.

I genuinely think that we'll have a rebound season. I believe that we'll knock San Jose out of the top 3 and get out of the wild card position leaving only the Kings and Ducks ahead in our division.

This is the most excited and optimistic I've felt in years.

Drop the puck!

Edit: Daniel and Vrbata with 30 goals each. Hank with many assists.

So my laptop is dead, and i have to get it repaired, so the magic number chart may not be updated for some time being. I will try and get it started today, but no guarantee's.

I may try and install my HDD to a portable case, and get the data onto my computer. Sorry for any inconvenience
