Hansen is great as a depth player, that is what we want, depth.

Benning isn't going to trade anyone just to get down to 13 forwards, he is going to run 14 forwards and give Willie options night to night.

We have so much depth now that we can sit 2 bonafide NHL player's out each game.

This makes sense to me. No trade is needed now and the Canucks can carry 14 forwards. I expect we will see some rotating in and and out of the 4th line until some guys really prove themselves. It is time for Horvat to get a shot if he healthy.

Hansen, Matthias, Dorsett and even Kassian are all candidates to sit for the next game (along with Sestito). I still favor sitting Hansen and trying a line of Matthias, Richardson, and Kassian, as they played well last year.

That makes Horvat, Vey and Dorsett the third line. I would like to see that combination. Or Hansen could play instead of Dorsett.

You would think that line with both Horvat and Hansen should be able to play shutdown (if Hansen picks up his game), and Vey should add a legitimate offensive threat. Vey can be a passer or a trigger man and might mesh pretty well with Horvat.

Dorsett is a high octane, energy bringing grinder.

Hansen can play that role as well and can chip in offensively from time to time.

Matthias on the other hand doesn't hit, he doesn't score, he's subpar in the dot, and just in general he seems to be behind the play a lot of the time. I think he needs to sit and think about what he needs to do to succeed on this team.

I'd say Hansen too. Not that Matthias has lit the world on fire, but he is a centreman with size. I'm sure Hansen sees his role right now as a big demontion, so it must be tough to get up for games, which only makes him look more replacable, but he doesn't have the hands to finish enough of the chances he gets to warrant playing on a 3rd line with skilled players. At least not without trying other guys there first.

This seems a close enough decision that it can be made for a minor injury we never hear about, how someone looks in practice, how the coaching staff believe each player will react to sitting or any of a number of other factors that the coaches have to consider but which information isn't available to most of the rest of us.

Personally, all else being equal, I'm torn between letting Matthias think about how he needs to play (the point made by Mathew Barzal) and trying out Richardson-Matthias Kassian as mentioned by JamesB. Subject to niggling injuries and other factos I'm not aware of, that suggests Matthias or Hansen, neither of whom seems to have hit his stride yet this season, sits.

Guys will get injured. No point trading anyone at this point. I think it will be a rotation between Matthias, Hansen, Kassian, Sestito and Horvat to be honest, hopefully two of them really step up and give the coaches no choice but to play them.

Question about Horvat: Can we send him to the AHL for a 'conditioning stint' much like the Lightning have done with Drouin? From what I understand Drouin can spend up to 14 days in the AHL even though he has Junior eligibility still.

If it's possible, it seems to me that getting Horvat into a few AHL games to sharpen him up and see if he earns a shot on the team makes sense. It gives the current roster time to settle in and get 10+ games under their belt so the coaching staff can see who is working out and where. Then, if he's earned it, Horvat can fit in for his 9 games and replace the weakest link to see if he makes a difference for us.

The only reason I can think that he might not be eligible for this is because of IR eligibility perhaps? Drouin broke something and was on IR. Horvat wasn't...?

I say Richardson gets to sit with Top Sixtito. Real test of Horvat's skill will be if he can produce on the bottom six, especially as a winger.

Either

Higgins-Vey-Hansen

Horvat/Matthias-Matthias/Horvat-Dorsett

or

Higgins-Vey-Horvat

Dorsett-Matthias-Hansen

Also, I don't think Horvat will play until saturday's game against Tampa.

I thought that was already confirmed that he's not making the trip to Edmonton
