Roots and American Apparel

"Roots manufactures its products in Canada, (at our own state-of-the-art factory in Toronto) the United States, South Asia, Asia and South America. Whether in Canada or abroad, we only work with reputable suppliers who adhere to the Roots Workplace Code of Conduct."

Roots is not exclusively Canadian, even though many believe them to be.

My bad.

Both Roots and American Apparel are mightily overrated and overpriced though.

BC grown potatoes.

Seriously tho a lot of manufacturing moved off shore a long time ago to places where workers get paid next to nothing and with no ability to compete on price the factories here shut down. There are a lot of products that have no Canadian made option. We sell classic American car parts, almost all made new in Taiwan. Chroming costs an arm and a leg here where disposal of the left over chemicals is so expensive. Taiwanese companies all just dump their left over chemicals untreated straight into the ocean. Hard to compete on price with that.

You can buy a new Toyota Rav4 made in Woodstock Ontario though. Its a weird world.

Even more misleading is the Product of Canada label. Fish raised, caught, processed in China gets shipped to Canada. A company in Canada adds a sauce or spice to the fish. Boom... Product of Canada. I think Marketplace did a story on that years ago.

Side note: all the major 'Italian' fashion brands have all their stuff made in Eastern Europe, shipped to Italy to put the labels on then call it made in Italy.

Whenever I see 'Made in Italy' I put it down. It's a lie.

There is nothing wrong with made in _______, if the quality is good and the price is competitive. If a company manages to produce good quality products at a low cost, don't blame them for it.

Mountain Equipment Co-Op does NOT sell only gear made in Canada, BUT, on the signage in stores if there is a lil maple leave on the bottom corner of the sign displaying the product info, it means that a minimum of 90% of the materials were made in Canada.

Pretty much impossible to find general things entirely made in Canada anymore.

Side note 2:

Apple designs their products in the USA and manufactures them in China.

Mattel designs their products in the USA and manufactures them in China.

When something goes wrong with an Apple product, people blame Apple.

When something goes wrong with an Mattel toy, people blame China.

It's the result of the public somehow not able to associate China being able to make high quality products, combined with the fact that Apple has done a marvellous branding job to make people emotionally attached their products to 'high quality' and 'American', despite the fact that everyone knows Apple manufactures in China.
