Horvat assigned to Uttica?

Is it a guaranteed full 9 games (once he suits up for the Canucks) or can he be sent down to junior any time prior? Reason I ask, is that prior to Horvat being sent down for his conditioning stint, there were a few Canucks (Hansen, Kassian, Richardson, maybe Burrows and Matthias) that weren't really playing all that well, thus making the decision "easier" as to who sits and where Horvat slots in. Two weeks later (today) the team seems to be coming together nicely and most if not all of the players that were under performing seem to have it more or less together giving the team a nice 4 line balance and a 4 line scoring threat. Not really sure where he would slot in now? Also, is the road trip of death the ideal time to put him in?

I think this is actually the ideal time to put him in. If Horvat shows he can compete against the SoCal teams, then he will become a permanent fixture on this team. On the other hand, if Horvat shows he is not yet read to compete against the elite of the NHL, then he will take his 9 games and go back down to juniors and we will see him again next year.

On the other hand, if we were playing his 9 games against teams like Edmonton/Calgary/Caroline, would that really give us a true picture of whether or not he is ready to compete at the highest level? He may certainly do well, but I don't think playing well against bottom feeders would cement his place on this team.

The way I see it, playing him against the strongest teams will give him the best shot at staying on the team full time.

Players that make a good transition from the OHL straight into the NHL are often superstar kids who are scoring at around 2 points per game in the junior leagues.

Forwards a few years out of their draft class who have played in the AHL usually score at just below or at a point per game in the AHL before having mediocre success in the NHL.

Go down the list of current full-time NHLers and this is true for just about all of them. Horvat did well in the OHL but was never a phenom like Crosby/Perry/McDavid so will have to develop and grow more by first proving himself at the AHL level. I want to see him score at a 60 point pace in the AHL before he makes the jump to the NHL.

Absolutely agree that him missing the time that he did works out better for him and the Canucks. He's getting to play more pro hockey than he would have (so far in 4 AHL games he's 0-0-0, an even 0 plus/minus, 8SOG, 2PIM. I can't find what his AOIT is).

And as someone said now you get to see him against your true division rivals, and some of the elite teams in the league. Also letting the core guys learn a new coach and system, and gave Willie D a chance to see where he can fit Horvat in. There has to be an improvement we can make on that 3rd line to cash in on the way Kassian is playing.

*Entirely different type of player.

Horvat's not expected to come in and light it up. He's expected to come in, play solid defensively and solidify the bottom 6. Time will tell if he does that this season or not. We'll be finding out shortly.
