Does Vey really fit in this line-up?

the problem is not vey. our 2nd line of burr boinini higgins isnt creating enoughh scoring chances right now. vey is doing his job right now and isnt a defensive liabilty. the only problem i see in vey is putting him on the power play cuz he looks awkward out there at times. and sedin not passing to him is evidence that he doesnt go to the right places or they dont trust him to make a play

Besides his lack of faceoff ability, I've been very happy with his play so far. He went from not being able to crack an (admittedly excellent) LA lineup at all to being on pace for almost 50 points.

Expectations might be a bit wee high, OP. If he were to finish the season with 40 points I'd be beyond thrilled, and you should be too.

Vey is an offensive player. Personally, I think he needs to be in the top 6, or he's not being deployed to his strengths.

I could see him on line #2 with Bonino and, holy controversy, Vrbata. Bonino is the centre, so Vey would have to play on his off wing, LW, which isn't that difficult of an adjustment.

Burrows has been the most successful winger with the Sedins so I'd reunite them. We also need a goal scorer on the 2nd line, which we don't currently have.

Sedin - Sedin - Burrows

Vey - Bonino - Vrbata

Higgins - Horvat/Richardson - Hansen

Kassian - Richardson/Matthias - Dorsett

Sitting tied 4th on the team in points, as a rookie, playing in the bottom 6 lines. We complain constantly about not giving young guys a chance and when we do we complain they aren't ready.

I bet if Vey was a Canuck draft pick the tune would be different (or if Shinkaruk was putting up the exact same performance).

3 points in 5 games = Bad? I think the only area he is being misused is not on the 2nd PP unit. Too many passers on that first unit, our second looks exposed. Get him on the second and let him make Burr Bones and Higgins look good. (He's playing the point on our first unit for those that don't know.)

I agree with this

For now maybe bench him and will fire him up

how bout cdc benches you. ya let's bench a guy on pace for 50 points playing bottom 6. I stick up for you when people bash you for all the silly posts you make, but maybe you are a troll

He's been a PPG player in the AHL during his tenure. He has 3 points in 5gp. Although his faceoff game needs improvement, it would be best for him to stick with the bigs and get some experience. He's really been great on the PP. That Dorsett/Vey/Hansen line was very good last night all because of Vey.

So no, he deserves a spot on our line. I would love WD to try out a Vey/Bonino/Kassian line. Please Desjardins, give Kassian a chance on the top 6!

This is right. Vey was the top scorer in the WHL and all of the CHL in his final Junior year and was a point a game player in the AHL (something not achieved by any Canuck prospect in recent memory). He is not a physical player or a defensive shutdown player. To be effective in the NHL he needs to score and ultimately play in the top six.

To be a legitimate top six player a player needs to score about half a point per game or more. Higgins has not achieved that with the Canucks and neither has Hansen and Burrows has not achieved that lately. It is early going, but Vey has 3 points in 5 games. If he can keep up that pace and be decent defensively, the Canucks have to be happy and will probably move him to the second line by the end of the season. That would be a very good return in a trade for a second round draft pick.

And there is no way he can sent to Utica. He would have to clear waivers and would be quickly picked up by another team. He is a bargain at his current cap hit and is a high potential player.

By the way, Hodgson has 1 pt in 7 games so far this year and is -6 in +/-. He is an interesting comparison with Vey and he is getting paid 7 times as much. I bet Vey has a better year than Hodgson.

It is early days, but so far Vey looks fine. It would be nice to see him winning more face-offs, but's let's not get carried away.

He's got 3 points in 5 games which is better than all of our 2nd liners so far. Higgins, Burrows and Bonino are the reason we're doing so badly. We need an infusion of youth and get rid of ice time from Higgins and Burrows.

Sedin - Sedin - Vbrata

Kassian - Bonino - Vey

Higgins - Matthias - Burrows

Hansen - Richardson - Shinkaruk/Jensen

Honestly I think he needs to develop more. Either he is a centre that can win face-offs, or a playmaking winger in the top 6. Right now he isn't an affective centre, and doesn't fit as top 6 winger.

He needs some time in Utica to develop as a centre, or possibly it won't work out.

As i see it we are missing a checking 3rd line, and the pieces are not clicking, especially defensively.

What may, i say may work (at least a little better) would be something like this:

sedin sedin vrbata

burr bonino kass

higgins horvat (not sure if he's ready) hansen (checking line)

matthais (hasn't looked good) richardson dorsett

this isn't a proposal thread. it seems that Willie is trying to make something work thats just not there. could vey be a 3rd or 4 th line centre. only if he can take draws. As a 3rd 4th line winger i don't see it at all

1 - He's waiver eligible. No way he makes it to Utica. I have no idea what you've been watching but he doesn't look out of place out there at all.

2 - Vey has 3 points in 5 games. That translates to about 48 points for his rookie season. It's also more points than Shink and Jensen have combined in the AHL.

3 - Kesler was 40.2% in faceoffs his first NHL season (28 games). He finished his first full NHL season at 46.8%.

4 - You'd send a guy that could contend for rookie of the year through waivers and put a player without an NHL game to his name in as our shutdown center against the leagues best players? You don't see anything wrong at all with that idea?

If you want an actual shutdown line my recommendation would be:

Sedin/Sedin/Vrbata - scoring line, 1st pp

Vey/Bonino/Kassian - sheltered minutes, 2nd pp

Higgins/Richardson/Burrows - shutdown line

Hansen/Mattias/Dorsett/Horvat - energy line

He's playing better than many of the veterans so I don't see why he'd be a problem at all. I don't understand what some people want, one second 50% of cdc wants all the prospects in the line up but when they're in the lineup these people complain because it turned out he wasn't our new saviour.

So all in all, i think Vey should be kept in the line up. no discussion. I think he'll develop into a consistent 50-60 point player if given top six minutes.
