Does Vey really fit in this line-up?

Well, in the sense that he's a center that has a long way to go on faceoffs even though he's seemed much less effective at RW than C, he doesn't really fit. In the sense that the Canucks needed another C at the time of the trade for him, he didn't fit in June, either. However, he's got ability, he's good enough to play, he's been an important cog on Canucks #1 power play unit and he's still a rookie, still developing on a "retooling" team.

So, ok, no he isn't the perfect fit anywhere. He belongs in the lineup anyway.

btw, I thought he did just fine at RW on Tuesday night. My comment about being much less effective at RW than C was based on play in the preseason and very early season.

nitti999 you have set yourself up for some long-term pain here; don't suppose it will go as long as the question on needing Burrows though.

Didn't that poster eventually get booted as a troll?

Vey is a beauty and has already proven he can play several positions up and down the lineup.

Early yet but maybe a Calder candidate.

He is also completely coachable and doesn't complain about anything.

Face-offs were his only weakness at the beginning of the season (imo) and he has already turned that around.

Honestly I think he needs to develop more. Either he is a centre that can win face-offs, or a playmaking winger in the top 6. Right now he isn't an affective centre, and doesn't fit as top 6 winger.

He needs some time in Utica to develop as a centre, or possibly it won't work out.

As i see it we are missing a checking 3rd line, and the pieces are not clicking, especially defensively.

What may, i say may work (at least a little better) would be something like this:

sedin sedin vrbata

burr bonino kass

higgins horvat (not sure if he's ready) hansen (checking line)

matthais (hasn't looked good) richardson dorsett

this isn't a proposal thread. it seems that Willie is trying to make something work thats just not there. could vey be a 3rd or 4 th line centre. only if he can take draws. As a 3rd 4th line winger i don't see it at all

i bolded the LOLs

He has enough offensive skill and IQ to play in the NHL. His defence he can work on though. He's not bad but when pressured with the puck anywhere but the O-zone, he has trouble making the right play. Not to worry though, as you gain experience, you learn how to correct these situations and flaws.

He can play.

I'm much more worried about Kassian.

At the start of the season, everyone was worried about whether we could score goals and win games.

We're number 2 in the league and firing on all cylinders at the moment.

I don't think we need to worry right now, about who fits and who doesn't.

Let's just keep the momentum rolling!

I still think its a worthy question. I like Vey and his offensive prowess, but I'm not yet a believer that he is going to be a quality center.

If he can find his way defensively and figure out how to be a more effective winger, I could see him evolve into a Ray Whitney type player.

He has offensive upside and instincts and may develop into a middle six player in a few years if he works on being more consistently involved at both ends of the ice. While he doesn't appear to fit in a bottom six that is built on effort and grindy play, he adds some different qualities and skills in his more offensive-minded game, and that is one reason why this season's lineup is as deep as it is.

Vey needs a couple of years to get stronger, he looses almost all the puck battles alongs the wall.

I do like the fact that he is getting a chance and Management seems to be ok with playing him in a bottom 6 role while he learns the NHL game. Watching Pearson and Toffoli tear it up with LA does make a person wonder how much his stats were inflated playing in the AHL though. I think he'll be a good player but will take a few years before he makes any real impact.

I'm more concerned about Mattias. Now maybe its just a while to adjust to two different coaches. His play has improved recently. I do not envy the coaches and Benning, because there's going to be some hard choices to be made on our roster.

But it's nice to know we do have guys on the farm that will be more than just warm bodies on the ice.
