riffraff
I think the way the entire music industry is structured makes it extremely difficult for anyone, hip hop or otherwise, to achieve "legendary" status in this day and age. A few artists nowadays manage to maintain a healthy career for the better part of a decade, the norm seems to be for the industry to move on to the next big thing long before that. Artists like Lady Gaga and Madonna before her, have to constantly reinvent themselves, or risk being consigned to proverbial scrap heap. Compare that to the bands who were big in the 60s and 70s, like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Pink Floyd, ACDC, the Eagles and the Who. (to name just a handful) Still relevant 30 or 40 years later... Very good point regarding the music industry. I think as well that bands such as the ones you mentioned all have the common denominator of talent and artistry. They formed the genre of rock admittedly in most cases borrowing from early black (afro american) blues. But essentially they formed rock. They were given all the freedom by the companies to remain artistic rather than becoming a product defined by the companies. Today a band only needs average talent and a marketable look. Guitar gods angus young, jimi page etc, were not attractive men or, are not. Bands also took pride in creating start to finish albums as well as touring and playing live. Now all a band needs to dois make one hit to sell to iTunes, tv commercials and tv dramas. The staying power is a result of true talent and art. When the art is removed and replaced with greed and watered down talent, the result is thousands of groups weve already forgotten.

johngould21
I'm glad they did the reunion at Royal Albert Hall before it was too late. I saw Don McClean at the Hall in 1972, incredible sound, what a venue. I had to see how many holes it took to fill.

Ghostsof1915
The funny thing is I think MuchMusic and MTV are totally missing the boat. Its very inexpensive to shoot a video and record these days. You'd think since it's so cheap, airing music videos would be a no brainer. That would allow exposure to new bands, concerts, etc. But no, they'd rather go with reality tv, and oddly enough, non-musical content. With shows like the Voice, and American Idol, you'd think MuchMusic and MTV would be all over that.....
