Penguins’ Maatta To Undergo Surgery For Tumor of The Thyroid Gland; Full Recovery Expected

Recommended Posts

Hopefully he's not getting his entire thyroid gland removed that is not something you want to have removed completely.

According to the NHL.com story he's not expected to need radiation or chemo, is "expected to make a full recovery and live a healthy life, with no detriment to his career long-term," and is expected to be back in the lineup within 4 weeks, so I highly doubt it's his entire thyroid gland.

The story also said that thyroid tumors aren't that uncommon for young people, which hopefully means they have good reason for their positive take on the situation. According to the American Thyroid Association, the worst that happens for most people is that they need to take a hormone replacement for the rest of their lives. Not sure how that would impact a professional athlete but hopefully he won't need to.

Wishing him all the best!

  • 3 weeks later...

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Olli Maatta practiced Monday and coach Mike Johnston termed him "a game-time decision" for Tuesday against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre.

Maatta had surgery Nov. 4 to remove a cancerous tumor from his thyroid gland. He started skating again a week later, but the original prognosis was for Maatta to miss about four weeks. Tuesday will mark two weeks since the procedure.

The 20-year-old has one goal and six points in 10 games this season.

Johnston said forward Pascal Dupuis will not make the trip to Montreal. Dupuis went to see the doctor Monday and Johnston said the Penguins would have an update in the next 24-48 hours.

So glad it went well for him!

Hope everything is going to be fine with this kid. He's going to be a great defenseman.

I still don't understand why Calgary didn't draft him and instead went with Jankowski.

Cause Jankowski was the steal of the draft!
