Green Building
What? They're not even the biggest team in Canada. The Habs are more popular than TO. If you measure success or size by profit, which gives an idea of the size of the fanbase, something which is impossible to get a true count of, then the Leafs are the most successful. Forbes has them valued as the only NHL team over $1 billion. Just not true. The Leafs are more popular. They've iced one of the worst teams consistently and still have a large fan base. I hate the Leafs as much as the next guy but they take the cake as Canadas top team in the popularity contest. Going by Forbes' valuation, the next guy is a Leafs fan

McBackup
By valuation they are the biggest - no argument there. They also have about 8.7 million people in the Golden Horseshoe alone. Thats more than the entire province of Quebec. Plus all the brainwashed idiots across Canada who have been indoctrinated into Leafs nation. The Leafs have by far the biggest fanbase in the NHL. The Habs have a lot of bandwagoners who come out of the woodwork because the team won 24 Stanley Cups and unlike the Leafs has actually remained competitive in the post-expansion era. According to this recent poll the Habs are Canada's most popular team: http://www.citynews.ca/2014/10/08/the-habs-are-canadas-team-exclusive-citynews-poll/

I wonder why the only Canadian team to make the playoffs recently was voted the most popular in Canada.

Anyways, playoff success probably has something to do with it. Lots of polls in the last suggest the same however.

Thats basically another franchise. The habs are good right now, so of course they're going to get support in arbitrary polls But people vote with their wallets, thats the true indicator of popularity. All it really says is Toronto fans are willing to shell out more money. Maybe more corporate support? Maybe on average their fans are more well off? Could be array of factors. Okay, but by that line of thinking that poll you linked only says that there are more Habs fans who are both watching CityTV and willing to participate in those polls. The poll was not done by City TV - nor does their viewership have any outcome on the poll. The samples were taken at random and have a margin of error 2.5%. MoneypuckOverlord
good luck with that. It's hard to promote such a garbage hockey team.
Mollyworld
Makes sense to me, 3 1/2 years prior to the winter olympics in Asia. There is a massive untapped market in Asia that is literally worth billions, and if the NHL has any sense they will go to Korea and try to get a start in that market. European soccer and EPL and La Liga especially have made a fortune promoting their brand there, and the Leafs are only trying to get a headstart in that market assuming the NHL does the right thing. one-x
I doubt this is going to work. Unlike soccer/football, hockey isn't a global sport. It's only really big in North America and certain European countries.

Also numbers like 12%, 12%, and 33% suggest a low number of responses.
