Nicki Minazi's new music video

I know CDC'ers love to moan about the over-sensitive nature of "sOciEtY" so what about this?

The ADL (anti defamation league) has called out Minaj and co. for releasing a (seemingly) Nazi themed music video, right before Veteran's Day/Remembrance Day, and coinciding with the 76th anniversary of Kristallnacht, or the night the Holocaust began.

ADL says,

Nicki Minaj’s new video disturbingly evokes Third Reich propaganda and constitutes a new low for pop culture’s exploitation of Nazi symbolism. The irony should be lost on no one that this video debuted on the 76th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the “night of broken glass” pogrom that signaled the beginning of the Final Solution and the Holocaust.

It is troubling that no one among Minaj’s group of producers, publicists and managers raised a red flag about the use of such imagery before ushering the video into public release.

This video is insensitive to Holocaust survivors and a trivialization of the history of that era. The abuse of Nazi imagery is deeply disturbing and offensive to Jews and all those who can recall the sacrifices Americans and many others had to make as a result of Hitler’s Nazi juggernaut.

The video can be seen here. Warning for sexually explicit lyrics and blah blah.

Obviously this is an attempt to drum up controversy, but is it too far? Lots of fans seem to think so. And I certainly agree. Of course this is nothing new, as a number of punk bands used nazi imagery in their gimmick in the 80s, but much of that was used for ironic purposes and to represent cultural/political double standards. Nicki Minaj's video seems to be using the nazi theme entirely for an aesthetic purpose and for going viral--for which, here is my contribution.

Thoughts?

Oh come on, there is no question this was made for shock just like Anaconda.

of course it was, i don't think anyone is really saying otherwise, or that she's ACTUALLY a nazi sympathizer or something. i think the question is how far should 'we' let someone go before pushing them into cultural obscurity, a la mel gibson?

think about all the negative press Tarantino got from so many black figures/groups/scholars for Django, now imagine if he or a Jewish man were to make a video of self promotion that used KKK imagery? i imagine the backlash would be huge, and potentially really damaging

so where does that leave minaj? does she get a pass just because she's kind of a shock musician TRYING to drum up controversy? is it okay because she's black and has been marginalized like jews were? or is it too much to release a nazi themed video on kristallnacht? (lol)

She should have been pushed to cultural obscurity long before this.

I wouldn't mind the imagery if I felt like they were saying something with it, but if there's a message behind the concept it's lost on me.

I actually like the backing beat/melody in the track. Someone should take it and put some real lyrics over top.

that's exactly it. the time of the release and the imagery is just too much for me. not shocking so much as it is just straight up insensitive for no reason other than self promotion

and yeah, i think the music is fantastic, minus the vocals/lyrics

I've watched many tasteless videos over the years but this is in my top 3 for sure imagery and music total garbage.

Most if not all of her music is like that...

I think she might get a pass on this one as Drake is Jewish and he probably wouldn't have collaborated had this been some hate video. This is just a shock vid for $$$.

I'm more curious why you used proper capitalization in the original post, but not in any subsequent ones.

On topic, who cares? I don't feel affected by this, positively or negatively. If not for this thread I wouldn't even know of any whiny controversy. Unless it becomes a trend, you're doing more harm moaning than leaving it well alone.

/didn't even care to listen or watch, irrelevant unless you make it relevant.
