Santorelli (+2nd Rounder) versus Vey

We have no shortage of PK'ers:

Burrows, Higgins, Hansen, Bonino, Matthias, Richardson and Dorsett all play the PK. The Sedins are also very capable should the need arise. Santo has less PK time per game this season than the Sedins. What does that tell you? Vey has played center, wing and point on the pp this season. He was part of the top PK unit in the AHL last year (something you seem to be ignoring) but with our current PK depth is there a need to put a rookie out there? Not at this point. So where's the need for a 29 year old who hasn't managed to really establish himself in the NHL? Santo was a pleasant surprise last year but certainly not essential to the team.

Frankly I'd rather the young guy that could be something rather than the aging tweener we already have plenty of. Vey gives us a jump of several years development on using that 2nd rounder.

But the question of the 2-3 year time frame still remains. What will be Vey's role in a couple of years, assuming he's still around.

Daniel, Henrik, Kassian (hopefully), Bonino.... those are pretty much locked to be in the top-6. Jensen should have made the jump already. Maybe guys like Shinkaruk or McCann might be filling those top-6 open spots. Burrows and Higgins may still be there if they're still producing. Horvat may be the 3rd line centre, maybe even Gaunce as the 4th centre or other bottom-6 role. Add in an enforcer/energy guy and maybe if Hansen is still around.... suddenly there's no room for Linden Vey.

A 2nd round pick for a 2-3 year rental is kind of a waste, when there's another player who could do pretty much that costs nothing.

2-3 years isn't a rental. Our 2nd round picks have been a 0 year rental for 10 years in a row now.

We had 2 of them this year, we traded the late one for a player that has a 100% chance to play in the NHL. That pick has a 20%. Not a tough choice

Yeuck, Santorelli. Vey has ten times the natural talent, you can see it with the way he corrals the puck and uses his edges. We'll look back at this and laugh one day when we realize we compared a future second line staple to an inconsistent two way forward who couldn't crack the Panthers.
