Auto Tuner Thread!

Hey all,

Just thought it would be cool to get a automotive thread going. Would be cool to have a place where people can post pics/chat about their vehicles, and maybe have a thread going for automotive questions for noobs like myself. Would be cool to see a variety of your people's beloved vehicles!

Right now, I'm in the market for my own daily driver as the lady and I are having trouble sharing one vehicle (2012 Honda Fit) with 2 jobs and a dog to drop off with the family while at work. Debating between a 1987 or a 1994 BMW 325i. Love the smaller, classic look of the 87' but the 94 appeals to me too. I see so many 87 convertibles for sale but aesthetically I'm not really a big fan of them. Ideally, I'd like to learn as much as possible mechanics wise on either one. Hopefully I'll have one or the other before the holidays.

Dude its almost 2015 and your looking at a 1987 or 1994 BMW?? Might not be that practical considering repairs and maintenance for a car that old and it being an imported BMW.

I'm willing to do the repairs needed to get it reliably running. I know after buying the car it is going to take some extra money upfront. Old car so that is pretty much a given no matter how low the km's are. I've heard from many 87 3 series users that they are excellent cars if you put the maintenance work in.

every car needs regular $ for maintenance. The problem with a 30 year old car is that your going to put more dollars into the car regularly to keep it running than the car is actually worth. Also worth noting that European cars cost more to fix because of less common parts and less mechanics have the know-how.

I own an 88 e30 325 is and have driven in it every day snow rain or shine for the past 3 years and it is hands down THE best car i have ever owned. The maintenance is actually much cheaper than you might think. These cars were built to last and this one is still shredding tires to this very day.

New cars are ridiculously expensive to maintain. As OP stated he is willing to do most of the work himself this will cut cost by two thirds easily.

I own an e30 coupe with 288,000 km on it and I will be buried in it :D Amazing handling looks and performance for such a classic. So many parts available from original to aftermarket. Most BMW dealerships can get nearly all parts for this car still. Although I do not recommend paying their prices. Call them first find out their price so you can see how much you are saving.

Just did a major tune up( Plugs, cap, wires, rotor, fuel filter etc) Bought most of the parts from Auto Value and they were not cheap Chinese reproduction parts either. If you want original BOSCH parts you will pay but worth every penny.

The E36 generation Bmw's 1992-99 can be electrical nightmares so be very diligent with your inspection.

Convertibles are slightly different from their coupe and sedan brethren. Nothing that will throw you any major curve balls though. There are so many interchangeable parts from all three models of the e30 generation (82-91)

The E30 or GOD's Chariot as it is affectionately called by worshipers around the globe is quite possibly one of the most sought after models for so many performance and customizing reasons. The BMW forums are an immense wealth of information. Here is a pic of mine

Forgot to mention many of the drive train and suspension parts from the E36 gen cars will also fit on the E30's with little to no modifications or adapters. The 2.5L straight six is one of the best sounding engines in the world IMHO. Actually gets pretty descent mileage in the city but really shines on the highway cruises. Loads of torque for such a deceptively light car as well. My 2dr only weighs 2800lbs in full leather trim.

There is such a misconception about older BMW cars. The older ones were built with parts that were actually strong and made from better materials. The Germans did not cut any corners when making the early 3 and 5 series cars. So many on the road still here in Calgary.

I can take my 88 e30 to Calgary BMW and get an OEM clutch installed parts and labour with a 2 year warranty for less than $750 ? I know amazing right ?

Nice! Looks great and is that a tucked bumper on the front there? Awesome to hear you are an e30 enthusiast and I will definitely be picking your brain if you don't mind :)

So I found a 1985 325e that I will probably have by mid week (red too)! My first manual car as well- stoked about that! Just curious Dangles, what work would you have done first to get the car ready to be a daily driver. I'm thinking timing belt for sure, but what other belts/hoses/pumps would you get replaced? Fluids as well? I'm considering getting this first round of work done at a local shop that specializes in BMW repairs, just to make sure everything is done and right and so they can take a look at the car to make sure everything is up to snuff. After that, will definitely try to tackle repairs that are doable for a novice mechanic on my own.
