Credit card suggestions?

My present credit card company is pissing me off currently. I'm in the market for a new card, and I'm primarily looking for good rewards, cashback, or air miles. Whatever gives me the best bang for my buck.

I'm not opposed to annual fees necessarily, as long as the fee isn't cancelling out the additional perk it comes with over the span of a year. I'm not running a business, so I dont have an absurd amount of purchases going through credit, but I average around 1500-2500 monthly plus and whatever random big purchases I happen to make. Aside from my mortgage, all my monthly expenses go through my card.

Lower interest rate is obviously preferred, but I only carry a balance if I forget to pay on time so its not a huge deal.

I tried googling it, but all I seem to find is pages upon pages of outdated ad sites.

Anyone have any good suggestions?

I have the Alaska airlines card through mbna.

You get 1 point per dollar you spend. Just booked a flight to Puerto Vallarta on them. You also get one companion ticket a year. So you book a ticket normally and get the second for $99.

Don't know what the interest rate is cause I just pay it off. I'm sure it sucks but they all do. If you're into travel, especially in the US, Hawaii and/or Mexico, that's the card to get. Not useful if you want to go to Asia or Europe though.

RBC Avion or Infinite Avion. I have the Infinite Avion card and get 1.5 point per dollar I spend on it. The points are good for flights on any airline, so you can go whenever where ever. I use mine for flights to Hawaii, it's 45,000 points for a return trip flight as long as it's actual cost is less than 900$, which is almost always the case except a couple days a year. You should be pretty close to getting a free trip every year out of it.

The only time I use a card is for concerts/canuck games and hotels due to no choice, so to me it doesn't really matter which card. I miss out on the perks and points but would rather people don't know where, when and with who I spend my money.

With most cards you're going to get the same range of interest rates. Look at the perks and decide if those are worth it.

For example, we use our SCENE card the most. Unfortunately, Costco, one of the places we shop the most at, uses AMEX and is now switching to MasterCard. If there was a SCENE MasterCard, we'd have done that already.

Also, if you're carrying a balance, it would be a good idea to be using the same company that you bank with, so you can transfer money in and out of the CC to avoid interest and keep your utility down as much as possible, around time every month your account gets reported.

Amex is dead in the water now..

Not true. Over 80% of retailers take Amex now.

My wife and I go between the Scotiabank Platinum Amex card; 4 points for every dollar spent on gas, groceries, restaurants and entertainment, 1 point on everything else; and the Scotiabank Gold Passport Visa, 1 point for 1 dollar spent for any place we go to that doesn't happen to accept Amex.

to the guys/gals using air miles... how do they work if you book a vacation package? We generally go somewhere tropical once a year, and usually do an all inclusive which we book ourselves online. If I booked a package on my own, can I somehow apply my air miles to the package price?

I've only ever used my points for rewards, so I have no idea about the ins and outs of airmiles. I just cleared out most of my remaining points for a ps4 bundle + accessories which was pretty cool, but overall the rewards are pretty crappy. The value worked out to be less than 1% back, which I'm paying like $40 a year for. A free (mostly) ps4 is cool and all, but the value is pretty bad in todays credit card market from what I've seen.

I might start seeing better value out of air miles I'm thinking.

The alaska air lines card. You get a pretty big load of airmiles free up front when you get the card and they pile up incredibly quickly. We go to Vegas a lot and between airmiles and MyVegas points we get free air and hotel all the time. Direct flights On Alaska from Bellingham to Vegas. The best way to go.

I dunno if companies like WestJet partner with these "air miles" cards mentioned, but it would be a good idea to make sure the airlines they partner with aren't so incredibly restrictive on your travel. Some airlines give you crappy reservations. I'd rather put that money toward other things with more $ out of rewards and use that travel money toward an airline where I have more options to enjoy my flight.
