(Reuters) - Comedian Bill Cosby will not comment on "discredited" accusations of sexual assault that have resurfaced in recent weeks against him, his lawyer said on Sunday.

Allegations that Cosby, 77, drugged and sexually assaulted several young women decades ago gained renewed attention after comedian Hannibal Buress called him a rapist during a stand-up comedy routine last month.

"Over the last several weeks, decade-old, discredited allegations against Mr. Cosby have resurfaced," said John P. Schmitt, Cosby's attorney, in a statement. "The fact that they are being repeated does not make them true."

Neither Cosby nor his representatives will comment further on the allegations, Schmitt added.

The lawyer's statement comes a day after the airing of a National Public Radio interview in which Cosby, who is married, declined to answer questions about the sexual assault accusations. He has never been charged with the alleged crimes.

Among his accusers is former aspiring actress Barbara Bowman, who wrote in a Washington Post op-ed this month that Cosby had assaulted her on multiple occasions in 1985, when she was 17, including one occasion when he drugged her at his New York City brownstone.

Bowman said she never went to the police because she feared she would not be believed.

She said she had prepared to testify in a lawsuit filed by another woman, Andrea Constand, who claimed Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her. That suit was settled in 2006 for an undisclosed amount of money, and Bowman never testified.

Another woman, Tamara Green, came forward in 2005 saying Cosby drugged and groped her when she was a 19-year-old model in the 1970s.

Cosby is best known for playing Cliff Huxtable, the father of an affluent African-American family on the TV sitcom "The Cosby Show" that was a top-ranked program from 1984 to 1992, making Cosby a wealthy man.

He is currently developing a new sitcom for NBC.

The headlines came as recordings of the NPR interview were replayed and shared thousands of times.

The comedian had been joined by his wife, Camile, to take part in what they thought would be a highbrow discussion of his exhibition at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC.

At the end of the interview, host Scott Simon said to the comedian:"This question gives me no pleasure, Mr Cosby, but there have been serious allegations raised about you in recent days."

After a pause, Simon went on: “You're shaking your head no. I'm in the news business. I have to ask the question. Do you have any response to those charges?”

When there was still no reply, Simon persisted: “There are people who love you who might like to hear from you about this. I want to give you the chance."

The interview was then terminated.

After the show’s recording, Cosby’s publicist confirmed he had withdrawn from appearing on the Late Show with David Letterman.

In a statement, Cosby’s attorney John P Schmitt said the comedian would not “dignify” ... "decade-old, discredited" allegations of sexual abuse with any comment, adding that the fact that the allegations were being repeated did not make them true.

I would never think that Cosby would do things like that, but this does make a person wonder.

the only thing it makes me wonder about is how out of touch buress is if he's making cosby jokes during his standup routine.... but maybe it was a throwback thursday routine?

RAPE ALLEGATIONS: MEDIA HUNTS BILL COSBY, CELEBRATES BILL CLINTON

Regardless of the circumstance, time, place, identity of the victim or the accused, allegations of sexual assault are serious and should be taken seriously. Bill Cosby, along with George Carlin and Richard Pryor, is a permanent fixture in my lifelong holy trinity of stand-up comedians. I love the guy. I am in awe of his talent.

Nonetheless, a woman has come forward with the claim that Cosby assaulted her 30 years ago. The allegations are horrifying and media outlets from NPR to the Washington Post to CNN are treating the woman's story with the seriousness it deserves.

The scandal is a classic case of Power vs. The Powerless. There is substance to the charges, including a lawsuit Cosby settled with the woman in 2006, and similar allegations from other women. As loved and lovable and talented as Bill Cosby is, as much as I am personally fond of him for all the pleasure he has brought into my life, looking into this kind of story is what the media is supposed to be about.

Unfortunately, our media is not guided by the lofty principle of what it is supposed to be about; because history shows that when it comes to these kinds of allegations some powerful men like Bill Cosby are taunted and hunted, while other powerful men with the first name Bill, who have faced similar allegations, are protected.

I am of course talking about former-President Bill Clinton, who like Bill Cosby has been accused of rape and has settled a sexual harassment lawsuit. There is also another woman who has accused Clinton of groping her in the White House. All of this is above and beyond the countless extra-marital affairs that swirl around Clinton, including an admitted one with a 21 year-old White House intern named Monica Lewinsky. Clinton's deceit during the fallout of his affair with Lewinsky resulted in impeachment and the loss of his license to practice law.

Juanita Broderick's charges of rape against Clinton appear every bit as credible as those against Cosby. Moreover, unlike Cosby's accuser, Broderick was a reluctant witness who never filed a financial lawsuit. Regardless, the media went out of its way to discredit and dismiss Broderick as a liar, a tool of the Right, or my personal favorite, old news.

Paula Jones would eventually settle a sexual harassment lawsuit against Clinton for $850,000, but not before Clinton surrogates smeared her as trailer trash as television news anchors chuckled along.

Kathleen Willey, a Democrat and White House volunteer who worked on Clinton's 1992 campaign, accused Clinton of sexually groping her in the White House in 1993. The Clinton machine worked overtime to destroy and discredit her in 1998, and the media is still too happy to play along.

Let us also never forget that the elite media not only attempted to cover up the Lewinsky affair, but before Lewinsky came up with Clinton's DNA on the infamous blue dress, his White House was pouring every ounce of energy into portraying this young woman as a crazed liar and stalker. And again, the media was all-too eager to play along.

While I'm at it, let's throw in the media's never-ending Frankenstein villaging of Clarence Thomas, a black Supreme Court Justice who was dragged through the mud based on the allegations of only one woman. Unlike the allegations against Clinton, there was no established pattern with other woman. Just the one.

Herman Cain, a black Republican presidential candidate, was destroyed by the media just as he assumed the role of frontrunner. The sexual harassment allegations against Cain were nowhere near as serious as the charges of outright assault against Clinton, and no more credible. The only difference was a media determined to destroy Cain.

If political correctness was really about political correctness and not partisan politics, the media's offense here would be condemned by the left as racist. There is no question that what we have is a media that takes allegations of sexual misconduct against black men with the utmost seriousness, while a white southerner is protected at all costs.

Race is certainly part of it. The elite media is left-leaning and the political left is desperate to keep blacks "in their place," which of course means voting for Democrats. Cosby, Cain, and Thomas challenge and question that destructive cultural mindset. Therefore, all three are threats to Power. Therefore, all three must be marginalized and destroyed at all costs -- not just personally but also as a warning to others.

Again, the media is doing the right thing in chasing down the truth about Cosby, but not for the right reasons.

The media's motives are racial, not noble.

If the media was really about protecting women from powerful predators, the idea of Bill Clinton as America's first First Gentleman would horrify, not thrill.

Innocent until proven guilty. But if he indeed settled a case out of court back in 2006. Indeed, it makes you wonder.

I would think that it would have been cheaper and less time consuming than going to court.

Cosby managed to keep the allegations fairly quiet. Going to trial would have hurt his image a lot more.

I don't know if Cosby is guilty or not, but I think that victims have a responsibility to inform the authorities if an assault has been committed. If not, they are basically allowing the perpetrators freedom to commit more assaults, which hurts more people.

I think it's more likely its a case of a golddigger shakedown. Cosby might have had extramarital affairs (I think he admitted to it at some point) and it's easy to claim sexual assault and then wait for the leaves from the money tree to rain down.

Right. He was never convicted of any crime so what Hannibal Buress said is straight up slander.

Considering the weight something like this carries, I'd sue his ass off until his bones showed.

He was convicted in the court of public opinion, therefore not slander.

(Keep in mind today OJ is openly called a murderer despite his verdict, albeit not by people with large bank accounts)

The OJ Simpson example isn't really a good one. The guy wrote a book called "If I Did It" which hypothetically detailed the murder of his wife and her friend. That is pretty much asking for people to malign you.

Regarding the Cos. 15 years ago a friend of mine told me the black sheep of his family (a cousin) was a prostitute. She told him her top customer was Bill Cosby and that he regularly flew her to Vegas and Hawaii for encounters.

Make if that what you will. It's hearsay but it's juicy hearsay.

You know if he sues him, all the allegations will be brought forth in a court of law and it can be quite messy. All the women will testify that he did rape them. Cosby does not want any more bad publicity.

This is why an actual criminal court is based on beyond reasonable doubt and not the court of public opinion's requisite criteria of hearsay = guilt, or settlement = guilt. Innocent or guilty, allegations can easily ruin a career, and a person's life. Innocent or guilty, it's likewise far better career and PR-wise to settle and move forward.

Janice Dickinson becomes 15th woman to accuse Bill Cosby of sexual assault
  1. On Tuesday, former supermodel Janice Dickinson became the 15th woman to accuse 77-year-old comedian Bill Cosby of sexual assault.
  2. She made the allegations in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, in which she said that Cosby sexually assaulted her in 1982.
  3. Dickinson is the third woman to come forward to say that Cosby raped her since October, when comedian Hannibal Buress used a comedy routine to draw renewed attention to the decades-old sexual assault allegations against him.

In the Tuesday interview with Entertainment Tonight, Dickinson recounted a dinner she said the two had in Lake Tahoe, where she said Cosby gave her a pill for her stomach pains and then raped her. "The next morning I woke up, and I wasn't wearing my pajamas, and I remember before I passed out that I had been sexually assaulted by this man," she told ET.

Cosby has not responded to Dickinson's allegation — and it's unclear whether he will. In a statement released just two days ago, his attorney said, "Over the last several weeks, decade-old, discredited allegations against Mr. Cosby have resurfaced. The fact that they are being repeated does not make them true. Mr. Cosby does not intend to dignify these allegations with any comment. He would like to thank all his fans for the outpouring of support and assure them that, at age 77, he is doing his best work. There will be no further statement from Mr. Cosby or any of his representatives."
