Top 5 destinations for holidays

Totally depends what kind of trip you want.

Places I've been that were best for beach: Sayulita or Yalapa near Puerto Vallarta, Ko Samet in Thailand or Crete.

Best cities: Rome, Tokyo, Seoul (but I lived there don't know how it'd be as a traveler), NYC, Vilnius, Paris, Phnom Penh.

Best overall countries in general: Nepal, Estonia, France, Korea, Japan.

Least friendly: Russia by a mile.

Worst cities: Hong Kong, Manilla, Malaga, Irkutsk.

Not really including US or here cause it's too easy.

Still lots of the world to go hit up--South America is tops on the list with Iceland/Ireland.

I spent a weekend in Lake Louise just before Christmas last year, it was pretty amazing, they had tonnes of Christmas activities at the Fairmont for both my son and my wife and I. It was expensive but a really nice family experience. As far as sunshine destinations, I liked Cancun a few years ago, La Serena, Chile, is also really nice.

Best cities I've been to:

1) Berlin, Germany (just for the nightlife)

2) München, Germany (even though their German dialect is harder to understand outside München, especially when you travel in any southern direction, I <3 me Bavaria)

3) Rotterdam, Netherlands (Amsterdam is way overrated, far better socializing as a tourist in Rotterdam, with less crime)

4) Wien, Austria

5) Budapest, Hungary (about as far east in Europe I liked)

6) Paris, France (despite the snobs and tourist traps, there is a ton to do, and not just for the artsy fartsy people either)

7) Copenhagen, Denmark (like Wien, way too big on museums, but more than enough things to do, and friendly people)

8) Montreal, Canada

(I'm thinking more in order of my last trip than favourites in order, I was a lot pickier where I went to last time I was in Europe)

Worst cities I've been to:

1) Detroit, USA (I'd say right there with Oakland/Richmond/Berkeley/Concord, CA, USA)

2) Beijing, China

3) London, England

4) Volos, Greece (really, anywhere outside touristy areas in Greece is teh crap)

5) Manila, Philippines

Wife has pretty much demanded a trip back to China and the Laos/Thailand/Malaysia/Singapore region next kid we have. There's some decent resorts the closer south in that part of Asia you go, but mostly the culture outside the touristy areas are rather cold, indifferent, and in some places are dangerous, whether it be from thieves (or robbers armed with knives), or people who treat Asian women like crap.

London on the worst list and Paris on the top? Interesting.

I have to say there are parts of London I did not like at all, but I found it pretty easy to aimlessly wander in both London and Paris. I'd take London over Paris based purely on the fact that the tourists are more spread out in London.

I prefer places that are more social (something I didn't appreciate as much when I was younger), not much of a sights person (i.e. in my trips to the USA I tend to avoid the Grand Canyon, Tetons, Yellowstone, Rushmore, etc.), and honestly, London sucked. One day I plan on visiting Ireland, so I hope they aren't as bad as the English at smalltalk. I had more socializing in Paris, where their native language isn't English. Add onto that having a variety of things to do.. there are far better places in Europe, to me, than London.

Edit: Sensitivity is also probably an issue. Since my family comes from parts of Germany where people will walk up to you and tell you what they think about random things, it's no surprising my directness with people sometimes comes off as abrasive or intimidating.

No thanks, I can stay home and freeze my butt off here in Canada. (And no, I don't live in the warm Lower Mainland)

I was there in the summer, it wasn't cold. But what a dump. Moscow and st Pete's were cool. Novosibirsk was...interesting. lake Baikal was neat. We took the trans Siberian train right across to Vladivostok. What a trip...

Isn't Novosibirsk the city with a ridiculously high number of heroin addicts? How was it?

Ah a German speaker (with German culture).

I've recently picked up the German fever. I'm starting to be able to understand/read words in a German sentence, but I know I have a long way to go in terms of growing vocabulary and grammar.

How well received would you be for trying to speak their language? I think my pronunciation is decent to spot-on, for the most part, but I can't roll my R's.

(sorry for derailing thread).
