(DRAFT DAY TALK)Benning VS Gillis- wrong forum re posted in canucks talk

If Benning was our GM back in the last draft we probably wouldn't have made a stupid move like trade Schneider for Horvat. Gillis muffed that problem so badly and ended trading away two top-10 NHL goaltenders for Horvat, Matthias and Markstrom.

Take it back a step and I think Benning would have been able to trade Luongo when he needed to, leaving us with Schneider who (if he had stayed here) would be a top-5 goalie in the league.

I reckon he might have been able to swindle Florida for their 2nd overall pick by trading them Luongo, our 1st rounder (Shinkaruk) and maybe Hansen too. With the 2nd overall, we draft Monahan.

Now, instead of having to sign a 6M goalie like Miller we could have spent that money on a star winger. Because we'd have Monahan, we wouldn't need to have traded Kesler for a 2nd line, center but could have gotten Lindholm or Vatanen off Anaheim (Kesler for Lindholm and McCann essentially, maybe a late pick too).

With that extra 6M we didn't need to spend on Miller, we can now afford a guy like Nick Foligno for something short like 2 years, 5M per and use the extra cap to give raises to the guys who deserve it.

This could have been our roster next season:

Sedin - Sedin - Vbrata

Foligno - Monahan - Vey

Higgins - Richardson - Burrows

Shinkaruk - Horvat - Kassian

Edler - Tanev

Hamhuis - Lindholm

Stanton - Bieksa

Schneider

Lack

Then in 3-5 years time we roll with this, a roster with a proper top line center, solid top-4 defence and a world class goalie:

Virtanen - Monahan - Jensen

Shinkaruk - Horvat - Kassian

Sedin - Sedin - Vey

Higgins - Gaunce - UFA

Edler - Tanev

Lindholm - Corrado

Stanton - Subban

Schneider

Lack
