Dazzle
The league still lacking consistency I see. Why so much for a hit? Gionta is a shorter player so hitting him in the head MAY be a lot more unintentional than if you were to hit a taller person.
bigbadcanucks
NHL = No Hit League I guess when you're hitting someone who is 5'7", incidental contact to the head is going to happen. IMO, the hit was neither late nor intentional nor led by an elbow nor was the head targeted. Guess you're not allowed to hit midgets. Whatever happened to keeping your head up? Miss Korea Bob.Loblaw
Emelin overskated the hit. He didn't line up properly, and the only part he hit was Gionta's head. Illegal hit, but also unavoidable considering the circumstances. All because Emelin mistimed it.

A common trend with the league is that they keep saying that the onus is on the hitter to avoid head contact on the play, and lack of intent isn't a valid excuse. So I'm not saying the hit was intentional, but compared to some other hits that lead to a suspension the last few years, this one is suspendable too. NightHawkSniper
Honestly I don't see any problem with the hit, Gionta is still heading forward with his body turned from his own control how else are you going to hit him? it would be boarding if he hit directly from behind. He did catch him with the arm/shoulder out in the head a bit. His arm isn't by his side when it hits Gionta in the head, if it was I would say it would be fine. Not worth a suspension, but the arm/shoulder did come up, so a fine is fine right at 1:04 is where I see it best, can't see the arm so much from there, but he clearly extends his shoulder out into his head. Why throw in the maximum for a hit like this when it hasn't been done before? Meanwhile, a suspension or two might suffice (as it seems to be the going price for illegal checks to the head)

ChuckNORRIS4Cup
Wow that's pretty weak IMO, there was no intent to target his head, basically Gionta head skates into Emelins shoulder which turns him around and then he acts like he's hurt. Then hears the whistle and sees a scrum, and has no problem getting up after the play was dead. THIS IS WHY KIDS ARE TAUGHT AT A YOUNG AGE SKATE WITH YOUR HEAD UP With the way the NHL is now a days this rule doesn't need to be teached to kids anymore, it's ok to get hit with your head down, because it's always an illegal hit to the head now. SabreFan1
Now that the Sabres have put a few wins together lately, teams are starting to play them harder. Lowry got suspended for an intentional boarding hit on Kaleta that happened a few nights ago. http://video.nhl.com/videocenter/console?catid=

Sneezy
The only reason why Emelin got tagged with a fine is because Gionta is the height of a garden gnome and had his head down. Under any other circumstance, and on any other player not named Gionta, Gerbe, Gaudreau, Byron, this would have been a fine hockey play.

6string
Emelin is on the radar for many teams in the far East, i won't debate the fine nor it being suspendable but his name is on record and Alexei can ill afford a cheap shot wihtout facing a suspension from here on in....
