on the cycle
With Dan Hamhuis set to be out for about 6 weeks, do the Canucks trade for a defenceman? I believe you could get a valuable pickup for not very much going the other way. I was thinking a trade with maybe Chicago, Philadelphia, St Louis, or Tampa bay. These teams (especially Chicago and Philadelphia) has cap issues and could use possibly a goaltender. I'm hoping we could get an Ehrhoff deal. I was looking at Grossman, Coburn, Carle, Stralman, Hjalmarsson, Oduya, or Jackman. Another thought was maybe sign a free agent defenceman for cheap like Salo, Pitkanen, Tallinder, Jovanovski, or Klesla. Who does everyone think we should get? What might be the best idea? Hello On the cycle, Just thought I would let you know there are threads open to answer this very question. Here is a link to the first one i found. http://forum.canucks.com/topic/365310-next-gm-test-for-benning-another-d/?hl=defence But I do not think any trade will be made in the near future. I really think that Mr. Benning will leave the team as is for now and make due with call ups. If he makes a move i think it will be closer to the deadline as it will give our middle 6 time to prove their worth and maybe have a higher value. Just my two cents. :-)
hatedkid666
At the beginning of the season the Canucks were't excepted to make the playoffs, and are in a 'rebuilding' situation. Now it looks like we are more of a 'middle of the pack' team. We have to continue to bring in young talent from our farm team to make this team a consistent cup contender year in and year out. Borvat
I think an upgrade on D has always been a priority. Now that Hamhuis is out it may be expedited. Problem is as always whats available and D are a hot commodity. May have to wait until the off season / draft. This team is likely a couple of years away from any hopes of contending. Unless they are willing to sell the future to make a run. I for one hope they are not.

The only problem with signing free agents now is they aren't as ready as a guy you could trade for.

smithers joe
benning won't make a move that doesn't make sense....he knows what the team needs better than we do and knows how to make effective trades...when the right one comes around, he'll act on it... on the cycle
Joni Pitkanen is a free agent?? Is he healthy?? I looked into his injury but found no update. I threw his name out there as he's only 31, has great size (nhl listed 6'3" 220 pounds) and is over 1/2 point per game (282 points in 535 games) and you could get him cheap. I like Klesla and Salo as ideas too but Klesla (32) and Pitkanen (31) are younger than Salo (40) plus Klesa and Pitkanen are Lefties.
Kesler+Horvat
Carle would be very cheap but he has a high cap hit.
on the cycle
My thinking is either use the cap as leverage or sign a free agent that was snubbed due to the cap not going up much. Klesla is playing in Czech league right now would be a good third pairing guy but I think Pitkanen is the best free agent option and Carle or Coburn would be good pickups provided those teams retain some of the cap hit. goalie13
Klesla is playing in Czech league right now would be a good third pairing guy I may be wrong, but don't guys like that have to clear waivers first?
Noseforthenet
Last I saw of Joni Pitkanen, his heel was shattered by a blocked shot. He's not available. This is a guy who had it, but you want to give significant time for healing. If he is available in the off season, a team gives him a try out to see if he can keep up. So, long story short, NOT a viable option.
Pears
I agree with looking at Pitkanen if he's healthy. PTO perhaps? Carle would be very cheap but he has a high cap hit. Matt Carle? Very unlikely Tampa trades him.
tyhee
Joni Pitkanen is a free agent?? Is he healthy?? I don't think so. He missed all of last season with a heel injury, in June it was reported that he couldn't get his foot in a skate still, and in early August (http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2014/08/05/report-carolinas-pitkanen-heel-not-close-to-returning/) was reported not close to returning, that the injury hadn't shown much improvement and he hadn't resumed skating.
