[Signing] Blues sign Martin Brodeur

Recommended Posts

Just won't look right ... Brodeur in another uniform. But he gets his chance to play for a contender.

But didn't St. Louis learn from the Miller experiment last year?

If you can SIGN a future Hall-of-Famer for that cheap, the worst that he can do is that he would become another mentor to Jake Allen, the best is that he can still win games for them or at least play competently. Low risk, high potential reward. It's also a much lower cost than what they paid to get Ryan (Halak, Stewart, prospect, 2 picks). 10/10 signing IMO.

That said, it'll be weird to not see Marty in black and red.

Do bonuses count towards the cap?

If so, what happens if Brodeur hits enough milestones to put the Blues over cap?

If not, why isn't it cap circumvention?

Would appreciate any insight from anyone with knowledge on the situation.

Interesting idea. I think i'm gonna look into it.

Bonuses are tacked onto next season's cap.

ie. if he hits an additional million dollars in bonuses than next year St. Louis must account for that in their spending.

Interesting!

And now that you mention that, I do recall Toews and Kane hitting crazy playoff bonuses not too long ago which caused some cap issues the following year.

Indeed it did. Their playoff bonuses caused the Blackhawks to be over the 7.5% max thus resulting in their cap ceiling falling from 59ish million to 55.

This was a main catalyst to the departure of Versteeg, Ladd, Big Baby Buff..
