Not sure that the team needs such a major shake-up at the moment. Alzner would be nice to have since the defense has not been the strongest in front of Miller, what with Hammer and Juice struggling early on, but he should be a top-pairing, bargain shutdown guy (Orpik notwithstanding) and will not come at the price of Sbisa, nor would he play on the 3rd pairing. Maybe we would try to get him if Hammer decided to leave but highly doubt he would want to play such reduced minutes as we would give him.

Brouwer would be an upgrade, but let's not discount the option of giving Kassian more time in an offensive role. Higgins has also done well on the second, it wouldn't be the best idea to break that line up already. Lastly, I'd think that DeFazio can bring at least a similar skill-set to O'Brien.

Overall, these are nice ideas but given the good run the guys have been on the team does not need to do these, at the expense of impacting the chemistry and letting young guns show their potential in bigger roles (i.e. Kassian). Hammer also fills the role that Karl plays and if we could get someone like Schmidt to move the puck that would be a different story. The only role that I could think of moving forward that would probably need an upgrade (given Hammer and Juice rebound and Horvat takes the 3rd C role) would be improving on Weber with a better PP puck-mover.

Possibly a fair value, but I don't think you will see a trade like that.

I am sure we would target Alzner if we had a chance. But even then we have to make room for him on the left side of our defense. And to a degree do we want to dismantle our forward structure and rebuild it?

With Green possibly / likely leaving at the end of the year; I doubt you will see Alzner traded. They have 3 or 4 young forwards who have potential to be dynamic also (Kuznetsov, Wilson, Johanson, Burakovsky). No need to dismantle their defense for a core return of an A/B sniper prospect (Jensen).

Wouldn't Orlov be available for less than Alzner?

As I am understanding it Orlov is a scoring D in the mold of a Bieksa. Maybe with the speed / vitality of youth but scores on the same risk taking and some skills moreso than elite skills.

But he could develop and iron out bugs? Just thinking out loud about the merits and risks.

Bieksa as a whole has been very good for us...

And yes, for less than Alzner.
