Western Conference Playoff Pace

Derp...

Recommended Posts

Looking at this season, and team shooting percentage the Canucks are currently running of 9.9% or so, it's safe to say they should be able to sustain similar numbers for the rest of the season.

There's lots of other fancy stats to look at, but I'm more interested in the amount of points they will need to make the playoffs.

So the current 8th place team in the west the Jets are on pace for 95 points this season. Pretty good.

The 9th place Minnesota Wild are on pace for 99 points this season... Wait a minute what?? Last year the 8th place team finished with 91 points, and now were talking about an eight place team with 100 points!!!

This is almost an unprecedented number there hasn't been an 8th place team to finish with 99 points or more in the last decade. So this could be, barring some set backs that most likely will happen for some team, the hardest playoffs to make points wise in recent memory...

Well the good news is the Canucks have 37 points in 26 games and are on pace for 117 points... <--- Holy Smokes

SO that means the Canucks only need 63 more points in 56 games!

In other words they need a record of 31 - 25 the rest of the way.. <-- and that's if 8th place has 99 points!

Now if your a pessimist then this might all seem like Homer talk, and one big injury can derail a whole season yadda, yadda, yadda. Really though, this team can go through a rough patch and still make the playoffs.

AND if they have a hot December like they usually do stringing some wins together, or even going 6-2-1 were going to be looking at 50 points in 35 games. Meaning they would only need to be a .500 team in 2015 to make the playoffs.

I am very pleased to say that we should be witnessing Canucks playoff hockey again this year, and I am already excited to see what Willie can get out of these guys in the post season. Especially once Hammer is back as well.

Thanks for reading,

GO CANUCKS!

Sincerely,

Linden, I've only played 42 NHL games and am still a Rookie despite putting up 17 points in that time, Vey

When its still early in the year there will be a lot of hot and terrible teams.

Over the entire year they will get drawn to the middle.

For instance right now the top 12 teams in the league are on pace for 104 or more points.

Last year 7 surpassed that at the end of the season, in 2012 only 5.

There are 5 on pace for 65 or less points. Last year only 1 team was under 65. In 2012 and 2011, just one team as well.

But yeah, they are in very good shape to make the playoffs, people are just pessimistic in this city.

We need to go 18-28-10 to match last year, 22-24-10 to match Dallas from last year, both extremely reasonable expectations.

Oh and for the "tank for McDavid crowd" we need to go 3-44-9 to equal Buffalo last year.

Like I said in another post, only Nashville has a better win percentage in the West than the Canucks do. We are closer to tops in the league than out of the playoffs. Hell, we are closer to top in the league than worrying about a wildcard spot.

Sure, a meltdown could happen again this year, but it is very unlikely.

Crazy stats, my son doesn't think the Canucks are playoff contenders, he was right last year. This year, touch wood, injuries have been less, and the management team has brought in depth to contend with those few that they've had.

We talking about making the playoffs? Playoffs?

This team shouldn't settle for playoffs. Now we talking about playoffs?

We have to finish first in our division. Anything lower and the road to the cup final will be deadly. Maybe if we finish first we'll get lucky and draw a weaker team?

Maybe wild, jets, sharks or flames. Those would be ideal first round opponents.

Then next round most likely the ducks or kings and the West final probably hawks or blues? Possibly the preds.

If we don't win our conference it will be tough. First round match up would be a California team. Not only do refs fix those games, but even if we get passed them we'll be extremely banged up.

This team has a 4 year window. We have to push for the cup each year until the sedins are still elite.

GCG!

The Canucks have shown me numbers I would not have believed if told in June. But I think it goes to the point that the Canucks were a good team last year but they were misued. A new attitude, an injection of youth and calmness into the organization along with the confidence which this team is riding on is huge.

The Canucks are on pace to be a President Trophy, Jack Adams, and GM of the year team. Players wanna play for each other, they step up for each other, players are playing their best hockey in years--i.e., Edler. Bonino, Miller, and Dorsett have been excellent players of additions for the club. The Canucks finally are a confident four line skilled hockey club with two calm and capable goalies.

I'm pumped for the Spring.

Can you imagine the interview with Kesler if the Canucks got further in the playoffs than the Ducks or won the Stanley Cup (let me dream).

It will happen. I can't wait for a canucks vs ducks series. It will be epic.

Make him pay for jumping ship and turning his back on us.

I hope the Jets and Canucks somehow face each other in the playoffs this year. I live in Winnipeg so it would be an unreal experience.

Plus I have grown to dislike the Jets, so it would be even sweeter beating them.

I would choose the Jets as well, if only because they would be easier to beat than the Kings.
