It was reported he was asking for that amount. On the celly but I can pull that up in a bit. He was asking for 2 years and Benning didn't want to commit to it.

He could of potentially looked great next to Bonino or centering our 3rd line. A little more offensive push than Richardson (not that Richardson has looked bad on that line)

Horvat probably wouldn't have made the team or we would of had to trade someone

We did not have much room for him in terms of centers, and everything is 20/20 in hindsight.

Not just hindsight. A lot of people wanted to keep Santorelli. That was foresight, not hindsight.

I like Vey, but he ended in Santorelli's spot. The Canucks could have kept Santorelli instead and could have kept the second round draft pick they got for Garrison and could have used it to pick McKeown. That's what I was hoping for, along with many others.

But let's hope Vey continues to develop. He is a good player already and still improving. He could outperform Santorelli over the next few years.

Theres no reason for not resigning santo. I love JB and pretty much all of his moves, but Santo should have been resigned. 1 mill at 1.5 mill is a STRAIGHT STEAL. He wanted to play here and he was arguably a top 5 forward for us last year. I called it the day he signed in Toronto, we will regret not bringing him back. As you can tell, he quickly became a favorite for me. I'm a sucker for 2 way players who play with have the heart he did

I don't know. He was coming off an injury and there was a degree of risk involved. Last year could have been an anomaly for him.

That being said, I really like his work ethic, and he seems to be on top things with training and he takes his career very seriously, according to what is coming out of the Leafs locker room.

At least he isn't in our conference.

I agree LW..but I had this debate(mid-Nov?) with another poster, & am now enlightened. Poor ol' Santo got caught in a numbers game, & one of JB's mandates was instilling fresh faced youth.

It's worked out pretty well for all parties, & good on Santo for soldiering on in a dismal setting(with a noted surplus of dubious characters)..Hope he bloke gets a LT contract..he's a hard worker.

From what I read, Santo was demanding a longer (than 1 year) contract. At the time, that is all JB was offering because Santo was still unproven (one 20g season does not spell an entire career). By the time Santo dropped the term, JB had already made his move for Vey. Santo ended up getting his 1 year in TO. C'est la vie.

I don't regret the move. I'm happy with the Canucks bottom 9.

People should quit looking back. The future is much brighter.

As far as I'm concerned, the Iginla and both Santos threads should be moved to the General Hockey Discussion.

Man, people on this board don't get the business side of hockey. Is not just about the now, he didn't fit long term with canucks roster.

Signing Santo would have meant no Bo. Bo would then be a year behind in is development.

Right now on the leafs he's getting 15+ min a game. There's no way he'd be getting that from the canucks.

With the Kesler trade and Bonino coming back Canucks already has 3 centers locked up. Richardson still had a year left on his deal. It is much easier to let someone go as a ufa than to go out a find a deal for richardson.

Add to the fact that we also had Matthias who plays center, a player Benning has said he wanted for a while.

And the fact that we also went out and got Vey. A player 5 years younger than santo, with more upside but also needed to take up a roster spot. There was no room for another center on this team.

Sure this year he might seem like a good idea but what is his asking price next year. He'll like pull a raymond and go get 3+ million next year. With Bo becoming our 3c next year could we afford 3+ on a 4th line center? He doesn't fit in with the team long term

They tried Vey up the middle though, so I'm not 100% sure that thrusting Bo into the lineup was the plan from the start.

Besides, Santo was used on the wing last year quite often. Still room for Bo?

If he's on-pace for 60pts over there, I'm also not 100% sure that he wouldn't be getting a bit of icetime here.
