how about we get johannsen from columbus for our 1st next year +?. columbus knows ryan will not stay after a few more years. vancouver knows he wants to play here. columbus might believe we will fall in the standings now that we will begin to face some tougher opponents, ie: not many oiler games left. columbus would have a low percentage crack at # 1/2/3 overall next year and a good chance at a decent pick in a deep draft. we would have a blue chip player. we will not win any cups this year. we could then ship out vets to contenders for picks next year and load up with young talent. one could only wish . . . sigh

Asking price would be young NHL ready center, dman, 2 blue chip prospects and a 1st and maybe even more. His value couldn't really be higher right now. He's got a real nice contract too.

We'd essentially have to gut our depth for Johansen. Think something like Bonino, Horvat, Shinkaruk/Jensen/Virtanen, 1st. Really wouldn't be worth it IMO unless he carries us to the promised land multiple times.

1. Canucks wouldn't be able to fit Johanssen under their salary cap without shedding some salary, so giving up just the 1st rounder doesn't work.

2. Canucks have more forwards than they can play, so giving up just a pick would leave them needing to waive a forward.

3. Columbus invested a 4th overall pick on Johanssen and it worked out well-they've got a good, big 1st line center who could star for them for years.

What do they gain from giving him up for a lower 1st round pick?

4. Just about any team would be prepared to pay more than a mid or low 1st round pick for Johanssen so this wouldn't be the best bid Columbus would receive.

All of this leads to-Canucks would need to trade more than just the 1st round pick.

the johanssen contract negotiations this past summer were pretty indicative that he wasn't happy in columbus and that he likely will sign elsewhere once he becomes unrestricted. it's sort of a tanking by-proxy, that is, if columbus were to give up their best player, they would have a legitimate shot at a 1 or 2 pick next draft. a really good chance. along with that chance they would take a chance on getting a good mid-range pick from vancouver.

as far as fitting under the cap, fair enough. a little tweaking to get the deal done

They'd probably want a current top-6 center, very good prospect and then a 1st.

Something like Bonino, Jensen and a 1st. I'd probably do that if they would, but only if the 1st is for 2016 (maybe do the trade next season). Then this is our new future:

Shinkaruk - Johansen - Virtanen

UFA winger - Horvat - Kassian

Sedin - Sedin - Matthias

Edler - Tanev

2015 draft 1st rounder/UFA - Subban

Sbisa - Corrado
