[Fired] Dallas Eakins has been fired, MacTavish appoints himself new coach

Sources say Dallas Eakins has been fired at head coach of the Oilers. Details to follow.

MacTavish was a huge supporter of Eakins. This would have been a very difficult decision for him.

MacTavish to coach, but there are also discussions of Todd Nelson maybe joining the bench, too. Nelson is AHL coach for Oilers.

Mactavish's work load just tripled.. can't imagine that'll make it any easier to try and turn things around. Not ideal.

Oilers are lost as can be. What is this now, 5th firing over the past 6-7 years? I'll be honest at first, really hated Eakins but then the situation he was in grew on me and I started to like the guy more and more. Honestly believe him be the first to go is wrong. He's not the primary source for the team's failure, the players/management are. So many coaches and all have failed. It's indicitave that the team isn't good enough and management has equipped coaching stuff with sufficient players.

Oh well, this won't really turn anything around. Matter of the fact is it'll probably set them back more. Another coach, another system to understand, another season to get used to him, another mistake...just think about this folks: the Edmonton Oilers are rebuilding their rebuild. That is all.

Lol he has nothing to do with their problems

well, he's not the main problems, but if Hartley and Nolan can do better things with Calgary and Buffalo than Eakins with the Oilers, then he has some responsabilities.

Not even Scotty Bowman could bring the Oilers into a contender, however any good coach could bring them to at least challenge for a playoff spot. Not be dead last for the X years in a row.

Coaches are hired to be fired, my friend.

The offense SHOULD be there in Edmonton - it was last year and the year before and they resembled a rebuilding team with some offensive potential, D and goaltending is AHL bad though, The entertaining, offensive group has been killed, and the Oilers currently feel closer to death to me than the Coyotes

The Oilers would be better off right now if they had ended up with Roy, Desjardains, Johnston.

However, long term - I hope that Dan Bylsma gets a chance to work with that group.

Edit: OH GREAAAAT, MAC T is BACK. This reminds me of Calgary with Jokinen a few years ago.

Eakins has the remainder of this season, plus two more remaining on contracts. Sounds like MacTavish may return to bench on interim basis.

Confirming MacTavish returns to bench on interim basis. Replacing Eakins who was fired this morning.

Todd Nelson will join Oilers as asst or associate coach. Fleming likely to take over in OKC.

You can't really believe this? Their problems are shared throughout and he is the guy in charge behind the bench....it's definitely part of his job to identify/correct problems and, if nothing more, he's failed to do so.

Just like Torts. And, if our season were to play out like last year, of course Willie would be part of the problem not the solution. Which a coach is relied upon to be in the end.....part of the solution.

So glad we didn't have some of our membership hire this guy as our coach as they were screaming for. Good sense prevailed in the organization and we steered clear of him.
