GDT: Around the NHL Weekend of December (27-28) 2014

Florida shocked Toronto, coming back from being down 4-2 after the 2nd period to win it 6-4. Good job, Florida!!

It was one of those weird games for the goalies' stats. Both goalies actually played well, but Reimer ended up with an .853 SV% and since Luo only faced 17 shots he ended up with a .765 SV%. That makes it sound like Luo sucked but in reality he played rather well. Even the SN-O commentators were talking about the numerous "10-bell saves" he made and especially a save at the end of the second period he made on a Kessel breakaway that kept them from going up 5-2.

Way to have your goalie's back, Panthers!!

Forgot to make predictions for today.

I also find it odd how many shots the Panthers are able to generate. Not just against the Leafs, but I've seen then out shoot other teams (top teams too) by wide margins.

They must really be playing as a team to get results like that.

Florida is a dark horse and might just sneak into 8th spot if they keep this up. It'd be great for Lu.

Would really like to see Boston at #9 spot at the end of the regular season.

But knowing Bettman if that happened he'd find a way to ensure that Boston would get in the mix for McDavid/Eichel/Hanifin.

It is weird how many shots they generate. I was actually looking at the stats last week and noticed something very odd. They've actually increased their average shots per from 29.9 last season (17th) to 31.6 this season (5th). Shockingly though, their goals per game average has actually dropped even after a few high scoring games recently that brought their numbers up a bit. Specifically, their goals per game has gone from 2.29 last season (29th) to just 2.24 this season (26th).

I'd love to see the stats on it, but I suspect (both from the S/GP versus G/GP stats and from having watched most of their games this season) that a lot of their shots are low quality. That in and of itself wouldn't be terrible IF they could have people creating traffic, looking for a tip, deflection or just a screen but they don't seem to play in the greasy areas enough. In a weird way, though, I think that might help them sometimes in that their opponents get lulled into a false sense of security, thinking all of their shots will be easy saves and then they get surprised when someone rips a nice shot past them.

They do seem to have improved their defense, both in terms of team play and players picked up in the off season. Having watched their games I can see improvements even from the beginning of this season. Unfortunately, when their defense breaks down it's a total breakdown and usually results in a goal against or at least a (or, a few) quality chance(s) against. They did drop their shots against though, from 31.1 last season (24th) to 30.0 this season (19th). Hopefully they'll continue to make improvements.

Of course, the biggest difference for them this season has been the HUGE drop in GA/GP, which was an abysmal 3.20 (29th) last season and has dropped all the way down to 2.48 (10th) this season. So they're having success in no small part due to that factor alone, but much like Vancouver from years past, if they hope to have any chance of ever making or actually being able to contend in the playoffs they have to find a way to start scoring more.

I find it odd how much emphasis people put on shots per game. I mean if you have less then 20 somethings wrong, but honestly Id rather have 25 shots with 5 of them being great scoring chances, then fire off 45 shots and have 3 scorings chances. Its like that Edmonton-SJ game last year where Scrivens had the 72 save shutout or whatever it was, but in reality, 50 of those shots were from the blue line or outside perimeter with no screen or traffic at the net. Its about shot quality not quantity.

Interesting, especially the drop in goals per game. I guess their average is still low from their early season struggles. Thanks for the info!

So true.

It's a lot like our shots in the SCF against Boston. Yeah, we put up a lot but most were low quality shots and had almost no chance of resulting in a goal and while we gave up fewer shots, we allowed far higher quality of shots. Even now, I don't worry about games where we get outshot by opponents because it doesn't necessarily mean you were outplayed and in fact sometimes means the exact opposite, that you were boxing them out and forcing them to take low quality shots in hopes of a good rebound or deflection because they can't get in close for a decent scoring chance.

You're welcome for the nerdy info. LOL

You're definitely right about the beginning of the season being particularly bad for them. In 3 of their first 4 games they only scored 1 goal! (Thanks to Luo they actually won 2 of them.) Things have picked up a bit but the goals still tend to come in bunches, rather than spread out over the games a little more evenly. So, while they've scored 4 or more goals in 6 of their 33 games, they've only managed 2 or fewer goals in 17 games (and 6 of those have been in the month of December). (Note: I included a 3-2 SO win in the "2 and less" tally being that they technically only scored 2 in actual game play.)
