Tom Sestito
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/report-panthers-sign-bjugstad-to-six-year-deal/ 6 years at 4.1 million What a wonderful signing for the Panthers. He's twenty-two years old, coming off a half ppg season is now up to 21 points in 34 games this season and is 6 foot 6.
guntrix
Still remember when Gillis was asking for this guy. Would have been a great addition. We like to give Gillis a lot of crap but I have to admit he's been pretty spot-on with his handling and targeting of prospects in his last couple years. Nothing against Matthias, as he's been great, but getting Bjugstad would've been incredible. Too bad MG wasn't as spot-on with prospects in his first few years as he was in his later ones. This will surely be a great deal for the Panthers. Bjugstad will be part of the core that makes Florida a yearly playoff contender.
viking mama
He's a fine strong young American hockey-player with viking roots,...would have happily welcomed him aboard as a Canuck, back then. Sorry we missed out on landing him, here. Lu must be pleased tho'.

Backes is another one that stands out when he made the 2.5 million offer sheet.
CANUCK-EXPRESS
I wanted him when FLA and VAN were in trade talks for Luongo. Panthers did the right thing by keeping him then. Would have been a nice addition for the Canucks though.
Canuck Surfer
Yes, but that also makes him UFA at age 28. Pretty young. Have to admit its a bargain for a guy who very well might be the next Ryan Johansen. The alternative would have been some bridge contracts. Then a 6 or 7 year deal when he's 24 to carry till he's 30 or 31? Y'no, max out the number of years service to the team. For a budget team though, a guy of this calibre inked long term for CoHo money is awesome! I have watched him quite a few times this year. Looks like an MVP candidate sometimes. Not all the time, but he's 22? Watched him absolutely throw around Joe Thornton. Had a goal, an assist, 5 shots in OT, and the game winner in the shootout. Game before he had 4 points. And his young team is vying for a play off berth. Yes that good sometimes. Maybe better than Johansen?
Tom Sestito
Bridge contracts are the most overrated thing. You get forced into overpaying no matter what. If they'd signed him at 3m x 2 or whatever, he would have demanded 6-7 million and got it. Not worth it in any way. We'll be able to tell in four years what FLA is, and if they're shit and management thinks he's not going to re-sign.. he'd be a highly valued asset around the league. 6'6, two years left at 4m, 26 + 11 months. Mike Vanderhoek
I would've added a little bit to get Bjugstad. Excellent signing by Florida. They were not going to trade him regardless.

Then again, massive overpayments aren't overrated, and we've seen enough of those to make a good GM wary.

IMO, the main point of bridge contracts isn't to save your team some money, it's to lower your cap so that you can add players while your rookies are still on relatively low costing contracts. Money saved on one contract can always go towards another.
