VancouverCanucksRock
Just saying, if you have roomates, beware. Even if just ONE out of FIVE signs a "mutual agreement to end tenancy". That apparently ends tenancy for EVERYONE(of the co-tenants)! If you have an dastardly landlord who will single out one of the tenants and coerce them(in a wide variety of ways) to sign, or a disgruntled roomie, beware. How does this even make sense? "They" say how the Residential Tenancy Act/Board is in place for the renters protection? That's a joke. I'm sick of renting, but I really don't want to put myself into a big load of debt, either. Just thought I would get that off my chest and also let you guys know how cray that sounds, to me anyway

taxi
The question is what did you guys do that made the landlord want to get rid of you so bad? It's a huge hassle finding new tenants.
Stefan
You're likely renting an illegal suite. Is it a basement suite? Is there only one entrance? Then it's illegal. Black mail your landlord.

Mr.DirtyDangles
The common renter here in Calgary has no pride of ownership and most rental properties are left in ruins leaving landlords with repair bills in the tens of thousands.
hsedin33
That sucks man. But honestly, go look for a place with a better landlord. Any potential place I rent, if I don't like the landlord, I move on to the next. There is no shortage of places to rent.

Renters would do well not to listen to this kind of stuff. I've yet to meet a renter who has any idea what so ever what actually constitutes a legal or illegal suite not to mention that the cities have zero interest in closing down a rental legal or not, unless it is an immediate death trap or a grow op. I know the landlord tenancy act front to back, and have a friend who works for a social housing company, and have my mother who acts as a landlord for assistance as well. Been renting for over a decade, and have used an illegal suite as leverage with a manipulative, crooked landlord before. Who are you? What gives you expertise? How bad would it look if there was an issue resulting in death after a tenant reported an illegal suite? Do you understand how law works? The city doesn't just overlook their own policies. Can't force anyone to listen to me, but if you don't like being taken advantage of, it's a fairly useful method.

Can't force anyone to listen to me, but if you don't like being taken advantage of, it's a fairly useful method. I'm someone who rented for a good number of years and has been a property owner and landlord for a good number more. I know the tenancy act, have been a party to a number of leases as a renter and a landlord of both tenancy act and non tenancy act rentals. But hey your friend works in social housing. oh i've also been a contractor and worked with the city re building permits, occupancy etc. You claim to know what you are talking about yet tell people that if a suite has one entrance it is illegal, that is 100% wrong. You are also wrong if you think cities are that concerned over "illegal" suites. .the only time they care is when there is a tax crunch because the legality of a suite is about zoning not safety. Your blackmail attempt may work on an uneducated landlord but I would not bet on it as a strategy or suggest it to anyone else.
