  • Police found Maria Suarez Cassagne's decapitated body alongside garbage cans

  • Sheriff's Office said son was angry over mother's "nagging"

(CNN) -- When the cops showed up to a subdivision Wednesday night in Oldsmar, Florida, it wasn't to break up a loud party or for any sort of bacchanalian revelry typical of New Year's Eve.

No, Mario Gomez called 911 to report something far more sinister and ghastly: His brother had just cut off their mother's head with an ax.

Responding deputies found the decapitated body of 48-year-old Maria Suarez Cassagne alongside garbage cans outside of the Tampa-area home, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. Her head was inside one of them.

Gomez told the authorities that his younger brother, Christian Gomez, had fled the scene, but he didn't make it too far. The Sheriff's Office said it found the 23-year-old some 30 minutes later on a bicycle about a mile from his home and took him into custody.

What could possibly lead a son to be accused of cutting off his own mother's head and then disposing of her body as if trash?

The younger Gomez -- who admitted to the murder, according to the Sheriff's Office -- was apparently fed up with his mother's "nagging" over the previous two days about moving some boxes into the attic, Sheriff Bob Gualtieri told CNN.

Christian Gomez, 23, has been charged with first-degree murder and is in the Pinellas County Jail. It was not known by the Sheriff's Office whether he had retained an attorney, and the Public Defender's Office was closed New Year's Day.

What is it with Florida and decapitations?

2014 - Yolanda Samaniego decapitated and burned by a coworker, who planned to kill others before being arrested.

2014 - Second journalist beheaded in Syria, Steven Sotloff, from Florida.

2013 - Dr. Adam Lambert shoots and decapitates his ex-wife, Kim Lindsey.

2013 - Gerald Longo decapitated by roommate.

2013 - 15-year-old Lee Heinrich Adams beheaded in suspected "satanic ritual".

2013 - Alisa Williams breaks into ex's home with machete and threatens to behead their 3 children, but was stopped.

2013 - Dejvid Mirkovic arrested for plotting to decapitate a judge and prosecutor.

2012 - Homeless man Ricky Leer decapitated another homeless man for knocking over the grill they were BBQ-ing on.

2012 - Robert Brown arrested for plans to kidnap and eat a child, had two pictures of decapitated children on his computer believed to be real.

2012 - Otty Sanchez decapitates her 3-week-old son.

2010 - 48 year-old Jan Dunn Keller decapitated by boyfriend.

2008 - Mexican girl smuggled into Florida raped, then beheaded in front of other girls for resisting.

2007 - Meredith Emerson and Cheryl Dunlap decapitated by Gary Hilton.

2007 - Lorraine Hatzakorzian beheaded by Paul Truccio and Robert Mackey.

2004 - Teri Brandt and Michelle Jones decapitated by Carl Brandt.

2002 - 18 year-old Gregory Shannon decapitated by Dennis George Roache (found him with his ex).

1995 - Prostitute Darlene Toler decapitated, later tied to Carl Brandt.

1990 - Daniel Harold Rolling kills 5 Florida university students, decapitates one.

1990 - Beverly McGowan decapitated by Elaine Parent, nicknamed The Chameleon Killer.

1989 - Sherry Perisho decapitated, later also tied to Carl Brandt.

1981 - 6 year-old Adam Walsh abducted and decapitated. His father became host of America's Most Wanted.

That's not even all of them. I also remember reading an article years ago about two young men killing and decapitating four children in Florida, but I can't find anything on it now.

They've also had a bunch of animal decapitations over the past decade. Plus some weird accidental ones too (man pulled into woodchipper, teen on rollercoaster...).

Seems a little harsh? May have been easier to just move out?

Terribly sad that a Mother needing a son to move some boxes sees her life abruptly ended like this. Guy clearly wasn't firing on all cylinders when he chose this as the best option.

Seems in looking further there's some mental illness involved (duh). Which is truly sad, as schizophrenia is a terrible thing for a family to endure.

According to the sheriff’s office, Gomez had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had previously been held under the Baker Act. Gomez had also been arrested for loitering and prowling, resisting an officer without violence, and disorderly conduct.

Something tells me that anger management classes won't do the trick. One has to wonder at what sort of environment someone has to grow up in for this to seem like a viable reaction to "nagging".

This is not to say that the thought hasn't crossed my mind on occasion, especially when the wife gets into one of her tirades about cleaning out the carport...

This is why all of my axes are stored in a locked cabinet, with the whetstone locked away in a different location...

Society in general, needs to get more funding for treatment, and research on mental illness. A lot of homeless people, and drug users fall into that path because not enough resources are there for people who need it. Perhaps with better funding and help, things like this wouldn't happen.
