[Proposal] Addressing Roster Issues

Recommended Posts

[This started out with a solid idea, but turned into rambling and probably unbalanced trades - apologies in advance. That said, keep in mind that EDM got a 1st + a roster player for Perron when it comes to valuation of players.]

We are currently in a scenario where we will need to address a few roster issues before the trade deadline if we want to get value back.

We have the obvious log jam at goalie. Miller is our clear #1 (at least in the eyes of the coaches), which leaves us with Lack and Markstrom (pending RFA) going in to next year, as well as the strongly performing Eriksson all contending for one roster spot. I'm going to stick my neck out and say that Eriksson is the one we want to keep (doing a talent/trade-value calculation). So to move the other 2 and keep Eriksson as our backup, I propose the following:

Trade #1: Getting Schnieder a backup

To VAN - Larsson, 2015 1st

To NJD - Markstrom, 2015 1st

Trade #2: Giving the Sabres their franchise goalie

To VAN - 2015 1st (STL)

To BUF - Lack, Zalewski

Signing #1:

Eriksson 2y x $1m

We also have an oversupply of wingers, and with a couple of high profile wing prospects about to come through and my guess is that one will make the team next season, we need to make some room.

Currently we have Daniel, Vrbata, Higgins, Hansen, Burrows, Dorsett, Vey, Matthias and Kassian.

Trade #3: Sending Higgy home

To VAN - 2015 3rd, 2015 4th, 2016 3rd (VAN)

To NYI - Higgins

Trade #4: Helping the Bruins dump some cap

To BOS - Kassian, Matthias

To VAN - Eriksson, Kokhlachev, 2015 1st

Signings #2-5

Vey 1y x $1m

Dorsett 2y x $1.5m

Richardson 3y x $1.67m

Goc 2y x 2m

Defensively, we are looking reasonable, in spite of the obvious lack of a #1 D-man. The big question hanging over this D-core is the signing of Tanev.

Signings #6-9

Tanev 4y x $4m

Sbisa 2y x $2.9m (QO)

Larsson 2y x $1.5m

Stanton 2y x $750k

We are under the cap by $1m to $1.5m with the following roster

Sedin - Sedin - Vrbata

Burrows - Bonino - Jensen

Dorsett - Horvat - Eriksson

Richardson - Vey - Hansen

Goc

Edler - Tanev

Hamhuis - Bieksa

Sbisa - Larsson

Stanton - Corrado

Miller

Eriksson

Selecting at the 2015 Draft:

6th, 10th, 22nd, 52nd, 87th, 112nd, 117th, 137th, 142nd, 172nd (Marner, Werenski, Andersson, Pilon, Looke...)

Shockingly that NJ trade looks really good.

I won't comment on the rest because added up it's FAR to many moving pieces.

I dig the Higgins trade as well as I think it's reasonable but I'd ask for this years 2nd and 3rd as opposed to next year as NYI and Snow are in a win now mentality and do not need more prospects and picks.

Honestly well thought out, an eye for the numbers and attempting to address our needs.

But aside from the Higgins and Jersey trade I won't comment overmuch

Trade number 4, no way in hell the Bruins are trading there 1st. Just because Perron fetched a 1st doesn't mean everyone on our bottom 6 will alone fetch it. The Penguins are for sure going to be a playoff team and end up with a 22-27 overall pick in the 1st round.

That number 3 trade would be poor management on the NYR side because they are giving away draft picks like christmas presents for an ageing mediocre/average second liner. Higgins can get a 1st. He can put up second line numbers but the problem with him is his consistency. Some nights he will be the most noticeable player on the ice. Other nights, he's invisible.

2nd trade we are giving up to much. Eddie Lack and a Zalewski for a STL blues 1st round pick? I betcha that STL first round pick is going to be around 20-25 overall pick while ours is most likely gonna be 15-22. We are trading a pretty good backup goalie and a higher draft pick potentially for a lower STL 1st round draft pick. We instantly get creamed on that one.

The NJ trade we are a tad too little. Larsson has tons of potential. NJ are most likely going to pick from 8/9th pick to the 15/16th pick. Why would they trade their higher overall pick for our lower pick? Aren't we going to be a playoff team? Usually playoff teams get a lower pick so this would definitely be a bad trade.Unless we completely crap the bed and get a higher pick. But still, I wouldn't trade my higher pick for a lower pick unless you are targeting someone and I doubt NJ wouldn't want to trade down due to obvious reasons.

I have to say no to these trades.

You really think NJ would trade their first for ours considering it'd be higher overall in the draft? Maybe they'd consider Larsson for Markstrom close value-wise, but I'd think they value both pieces less than what they give.
