Some Canuck #'s so far

Nice work on these numbers. I know it is a lot of work and i am not complaining. However, I would mention some of the omissions.

1. Given the importance of special teams it would be interesting to see power play points per 60 mins. I admit that only 7 or 8 forwards have enough PP time for the numbers to be meaningful, but those are the guys who do most of the scoring. A useful related number is PP goals scored per 60 minutes while that player is on the ice. This also allows a measure of performance by defencemen.

2. Another interesting number that is rarely calculated is goals allowed per 60 minutes while on the PK. This can be calculated from the NHL.com numbers (although I admit that it takes work). But it is an important number and we rarely know much about relative PK performance. And it provides a window on how defencemen are playing.

One useful point about PK and PP performance is that quality of competition is much less of an issue than it is for 5 on 5 play, as the opposing players are always high quality players.

But thanks for in any case.

Great thread, one thing I noticed is Chris Higgins' weird inconsistency. It's like one month he's on, one month he's off. Would like to see more consistency on our second line, but I think everybody already knew that. This just proves it. Thanks again for the post, OP.

The 2nd line is a bit weird. According to this chart, it looks like they were better than the Sedins and Vrbata in October? They didn't seem better than them at that point.

Oh well, so far it looks like they have done pretty good until December. Hopefully it was just a hiccup and now they can get back at it :)

I see an overused 2nd line that started looking out of their element after a couple months, and WD has been reacting as best he can by spreading around the attack over the bottom-6.

The defense should be looked at as well, imho. You're going to see way less effectiveness by our team to maintain offensive zone play as soon as Hamhuis went down. A lot of our defenders are currently playing out of their element and this will show as we go further down the road here. When is Hamhuis coming back?

Interesting stuff. Thanks for posting.

These stats are great. I think that their real use is to confirm or deny our observations. For example, 2nd line production has dried up and so has their shooting %. Its interesting that Burrows has been more consistent than Bonino and Higgins. Ok, this is a trend, does something need to be done about it (line shuffle, trade) or is it a result of normal variations in statistics? Or is the cause related to player synergies? The kind that are affected by injuries (Hamhuis, Kassian) for example.

I believe Benning said that Hamhuis will be back mid-late January.

Hamhuis sustained a groin injury in late November on a non-contact play, so his return to the ice in full equipment is a positive sign - even if he's yet to return to practice, or be cleared for contact.

The usually super-durable blue-liner told Sportsnet's Dan Murphy this week that he's been "pushing" his lower-body and hopes to play before the All-Star break in late January.

(almost) Hammer time? Dan Hamhuis skated with skills coach Glenn Carnegie before the #Canucks this morning.

He looks like he's moving his full body again on the ice. I wonder how close he actually is. I know they wouldn't let him do it if there was any chance of worsening the injury.

Point per 60 mins average. The second line, playing less minutes than the first line, will subsequently pull in a higher point per 60 %.
