Dine Out Vancouver - 2015

I haven't done it for awhile but enjoyed it when I did. If nothing else it gets you out for a nice meal and checking out a restaurant you might not have.

It'd be nice to see them consider more "out of town" options but I somewhat understand why.

Yeah, that's too bad. A solution for next year would be to package hotel/dinner combos.

They are doing that this year, but it seems limited to Vancouver and Burnaby hotels/restaurants.

I used to go when it was kind of a novel idea, like back during 2002. Went a few more times in the subsequent years.

Maybe it's just the locations I go to, but it never really seemed to be worth it IMO. The menus are usually very selective and mostly just the generic stuff. Not significantly cheaper either.

You could just use those entertainment booklet or whatever restaurant/coupon apps out there and have your down "Dine Out" any time of the year.

SocialShopper and Groupon coupons probably have better deals than Dine Out Vancouver

It seems "out of town" restaurants are taking things into their own hands. My cousin's restaurant in North Langley has a Winter Funk menu out for their second year in a row:

Might be time for me to go back and say hi to my cousin!

I'll be going to Maenam again this year. I'm not really one for eating out and people usually have to pull my leg to get me to go but it's my one exception. It's great during dine out because very few of the people I ever eat out with seem to like seafood and if you get the same set menu deal the rest of the year the chef picks and it's usually pretty seafood centric.

I'm sure it's all tasty but I wish restaurants would get a touch more adventurous with their menus around here...

Caesar salad?! *gasp*

Seafood or steak dish?!? *double gasp*

Ice cream or creme brulee?! I've never heard of either on a restaurant menu!!!

That's over-simplifying the dishes though.

Capers, candied bacon and anchovy dressing for a caesar? That's a little more adventurous even if it is a pretty traditional dish. That said he has lots of different things on his regular menu that are both traditional with twists (the duck confit poutine is amazing and I regularly get the lobster mac and cheese) but also non-traditional (the cioppino and seafood boils are great).

I'll be trying that float though!

Yeah sorry, just grumpy about restaurants.

I've been to Maenam before. I don't get the appeal, I've had better Thai food for a fraction of the price elsewhere

If I was looking to specifically have Thai food or for authenticity, it's not where I would go. They do, however, hit the nail on the head with exactly the kind of flavour and texture combinations I like. Everyone has different tastes so it makes total sense you wouldn't be a fan. A lot of my family loves German food. I have never hated food as much as I did when I was in Germany even to the point I was a vegetarian for years because it completely ruined meat for me.
