ArmchairCanuckGM
The trade deadline is approaching and I thought it would be interesting to see who would most likely be rental players this year. Also where will the rentals go and will they be worth it in the end? I left out the UFA's of teams that are likely to compete for playoff spots, since they might as well keep their current UFA's unless they find improvements. I also don't expect the Canucks to pursue any rentals and I don't think they should unless they receive permission to talk about a contract extension. Likely: * Shawn Horcoff - Dallas * Erik Cole - Dallas * Martin Erat - Arizona * Daniel Briere - Colorado * Antoine Vermette - Arizona * Jiri Tlusty - Carolina * Michael Ryder - New Jersey * Kyle Brodziak - Wild * Marek Zidlicky - New Jersey * Jordan Leopold - Columbus * Tim Gleason - Carolina 50/50 Chance of being a rental: * Jaromir Jagr - New Jersey (up to him if he wants to be traded) * Marc Methot - Ottawa (The team probably wants to re-sign him) * Andrej Meszaros - Buffalo (The team probably wants to re-sign him) * Zbynek Michalek - Arizona (The team probably wants to re-sign him) * Andrej Sekera - Carolina (The team probably wants to re-sign him) * Cody Franson - Toronto (The team probably wants to re-sign him) * Jan Hejda - Colorado (old veteran) * Martin Havlat - New Jersey (injuries) * Jeff Petry - Oilers (The team probably wants to re-sign him) * Derek Roy - Oilers (The team probably wants to re-sign him) * Mike Santorelli - Toronto (The team probably wants to re-sign him) * Daniel Winnik - Toronto (The team probably wants to re-sign him) * Mark Letestu - Columbus * David Schlemko - Dallas (Passed on waivers before, but could be enticing at the deadline) * Erik Condra - Ottawa (Bottom 6 depth) * Torrey Mitchell - Buffalo (Bottom 6 depth) * B.J. Crombeen - Arizona (Bottom 6 depth) * Jay McClement - Carolina (Bottom 6 depth) * Jesse Joensuu - Oilers (Bottom 6 depth) * Ryan Carter - Wild (Bottom 6 depth) * Jack Skille - Columbus (Bottom 6 depth) * Patrick Dwyer - Carolina (Bottom 6 depth) * Andre Benoit - Buffalo (Depth defence) Possible but unlikely: * Chris Stewart - Buffalo (The team probably wants to re-sign him) * Drew Stafford - Buffalo (The team probably wants to re-sign him) * Scottie Upshall - Florida (Florida might want to push for playoffs) * Tomas Fleischmann - Florida (Florida might want to push for playoffs) * Tomas Kopecky - Florida (Florida might want to push for playoffs) * Sean Bergenheim - Florida (Florida might want to push for playoffs) * Bryan Allen - Montreal (not claimed on waivers but maybe more enticing near the deadline) * Dany Heatley - Anaheim (not claimed on waivers) * David Booth - Toronto (Poor season) * David Moss - Arizona (poor season) * Bryce Salvador - New Jersey (old veteran) * Keith Ballard - Wild (Injuries) * Devan Dubnyk - Arizona (most teams don't need a rental goalie) * Michal Neuvirth - Buffalo (most teams don't need a rental goalie) * Viktor Fasth - Edmonton (most teams don't need a rental goalie) * Jhonas Enroth - Buffalo (most teams don't need a rental goalie) * Anders Lindback - Dallas (most teams don't need a rental goalie) * Dan Ellis - Florida (most teams don't need a rental goalie)
Master Mind
Why would we want a rental? I'd rather we build for the future.

ArmchairCanuckGM
Why would we want a rental? I'd rather we build for the future. I put this thread in the "Around the NHL" subsection and not "Canucks Talk" subsection. Just cause we aren't looking for rentals doesn't mean we can't discuss rental players and where they might go. 87Crosby
The only really intriguing one on the list is Cody Franson. He has a 3.3 million dollar cap hit and could be one of those defense man that puts a team over the top, and if he likes it there he might resign. But Toronto is going to ask for a lot in return. AriGold
If you can't beat the Kings and the Ducks in a 7 games series then what's the point of a rental ? Tired of mortgaging the future to lose in game 6 instead of losing in game 4 or 5..
2SKATES1STICK
richardson, higgins, burrows, bieksa, lack, markstrom, tostito should all be on the block.
etsen3
Guys the OP is not saying the Canucks should trade for any of these players. Just that they are available and even if we don't want them, other teams will.
Odd.
Only players i'd go for is Franson or Tlusty. Otherwise don't want the rest of the bums.

True, but when it doesn't specify that in the OP, it's easy to think you meant it as rentals around the NHL that the Canucks could trade for. Gross-Misconduct
Rentals are a terrible idea. This team will not contend for a Cup, so why throw away parts of our future for nothing?
Lockhart
We should be sellers at the deadline Higgins and Hansen would be somewhat valuable to contending teams.
Warhippy
Nope no, nuh uh no way no how no RENTALS Rentals have in 44 years never helped this team. Not about to start mortgaging the future now. no point to it really when we're building towards a future

smithers joe
if franson will agree to a contract extension then i might consider picking him up for bieksa or our bottom 2 d-men....
stawns
things are bad on cdc when a rental thread pops up in around the nhl, with no mention of the Canucks, and is met with endless posts about the Canucks not needing rentals. Myopia at it's best. I see the Ducks making some big moves, for sure.
Burnsey
Briere and Jagr could be interesting for the top 6. Briere known to be a playoff performer, and Jagr is still a great player even at his age. Jagr could be better as his experience could help for the young guys. Realistically if we do pick someone up at the deadline I would rather it be a present and future trade. So a guy that is like 25-28 years old, and will be able to continue playing for the team for years to come, although that will be hard to come by with what this team has/is willing to offer. It will all depend on what happens in the next little while.
