The Bookie

i haven't, bookie, but just looked it up and sounds interesting. gonna give that a dl.

as for 2010, really weak year imo. am i the only person who really liked King's Speech? lmao. yeah, not high art, but i sure loved it. Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush are two of my favourite actors though

also, another 2010 drama that went under the mainstream radar was the british movie "Another Year" -- very good drama from the very talented Mike Leigh

No you aren't, it was a very, very enjoyable film. The only reason I put True Grit ahead of it was because as a historical piece, The King's Speech was a film about the least known King with, I believe, the shortest reign. His impact was minimal. To the point where, out of all his "accomplishments", the best Hollywood could do for a film was talk about his stutter.

Again, this criticism doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. I loved it. Just wasn't the best, to me anyway.

I thought it was pretty good...been a while but probably a solid 8-8.5/10.

Glad you're appalling taste for actors doesn't extend to Firth or Rush as well. If you didn't like them either I'd have really started questioning your sanity :P

I really liked King's Speech too. Think it deserved the win.

But I wonder...am I the only person who loved Shutter Island? Thought it was fantastic. The dream sequence with the fire and ashes is one of the most visually striking things I've ever seen in a movie.

Lots of movies I really enjoyed in 2010: True Grit, Scott Pilgrim, Inception, Winter's Bone, The Fighter, Black Swan, Barney's Version, Fair Game, Buried... Also there were quite a few comedies I have watched multiple times, and still enjoy, including Despicable Me, The Other Guys, Date Night...

Then again, I also loved Toy Story 3, so what do I know?

I really enjoyed Shutter Island (not going to stop bolding GJ, get used to it). Nice to see a different Scorsese film for a change. Definitely not the same as Bringing Out The Dead, but in the sense that it was a departure from what is usually expected by him, it was a welcomed change.

I'm always pleasantly surprised when Scott Pilgrim is on the boob tube. Forgotten film for sure.

To me, Inception is such an enjoyable sci-fi film. I think film snobs (i.e. me 10 years ago), try to pick it apart too much. At the end of the day, it's a sci-fi film that takes slightly more brain power to watch than The Avengers, but isn't trying to say anything except "Enjoy the damn film".

Also enjoyed Winter's Bone, Black Swan, Fair Game, and Buried (surprisingly). I can take or leave The Fighter, and have not seen Barney's Version.

As for The Other Guys, very underrated comedy.

Bang on Monty. I always get a bit of a chuckle when someone mentions Inception and the pissing match about how innovative/not innovative it is.

It's a "smart" popcorn flick not @#$%'ing Citizen Kane people! It largely exists to entertain you, not be some life changing, alter your perception of the meaning life film. And it's a bit smarter than you're average popcorn flick while doing so...oh noes!!! :frantic:

P.S.

I also enjoyed Shutter Island. Not one of my Sorcese favourites but it was nice to see something different from him (as you said) and it was a good watch IMO.

guess I'm late to the party but, The Social Network is one I always hold up as an example of great directing although I'm not sure it was the best movie of the year. Fincher managed to keep me watching/interested over the course of a long movie on a subject I had zero interest in, which is an achievement imo.

Then again I just looked at a top 100 list for 2010 and nothing really jumped out at me. If I had to pick it would be either True Grit or Winter's Bone.

Has anyone watched Enter The Void?

Better late than never.

I saw the trailer for Enter the Void a few years ago and have been on the lookout for this movie ever since, but still have not seen it.

GJ knows my feeling towards TOL; the film where crap falls out of TM's mind and onto the screen and we are expected to applaud.

I also like most of the movies mentioned above by D-Money and Monty; Winter's Bone and Barney's Version especially. I also enjoy watching the King's Speech and Social Network (I don't have FB either but it is still a solid movie IMO).
