[Value of] Acquiring Grigorenko from Sabres?

Recommended Posts

With Buffalo possibly getting Eichel or Mcdavid they are going to have a ton of Centres. It seems like Buffalo would move Grigorenko.

If he was available should we try to get him say at a decent cost?

He is only 20, 6'3 200lb. Has that size down the middle we dont have, Matthias does but hes a ufa to be potentially and plays wing for us. Going forward I think Grigorenko could become a very good Center in this league.

Benning doesnt seem to be afraid of the "Russian" tag as many say, so should we attempt to acquire him?

I have never been sold on Grigorenko. Strikes me as a Yakupov type player. Successful in junior but going to really struggle at higher levels of competition. Wouldn't be surprised if he runs off to Russia just like Yak is bound to due. But maybe with the KHL struggling financially we won't see these young kids getting ludicrous amount of money thrown at them.

Buffalo has an incredible amount of riches both down the middle and on defense.

Center: McEichel, Sam Reinhart, Zemgus Girgensons, Mikhail Grigorenko, Tyler Ennis, Cody Hodgson

Defense: Rasmus Ristolainen, Tyler Myers, Nikita Zadorov, Jake McCabe, Mark Pysyk

Where they are thinnest is goaltending. They are also lacking some talent on the wing.

With no real bonafide goaltending prospect in their system nor in the draft, I think BUF's #1 goal this summer is to acquire a #1 goaltender/prospect that they can groom and a veteran who can split duties with him (or keep Enroth or Neuvirth).

Hate to see it happen, but I think there is a deal to be made between ANA and BUF that makes sense for both teams.

Potential Deal 1

To ANA: Sam Reinhart

To BUF: John Gibson + ANA 2016 1st round pick

Potential Deal 2

To BUF: Frederik Andersen

To ANA: Zemgus Girgensons

WHY ANA DOES THIS:

Ryan Getzlaf turns 30 this year, and Ryan Kesler is turning 30 - it's time to start planning for the future. With two young starting goaltenders in Andersen and Gibson, they can afford to let one go to acquire a top 6 center prospect. ANA seamlessly transitions from the Ryan Getzlaf era to the next.

WHY BUF DOES THIS:

McEichel is here to stay - so it's Girgensons or Reinhart. I personally believe they need the size and grit Girgensons brings (in addition to his skills) behind McEichel, even though Reinhart is much more talented. Whatever the case, they can move one to get a bonafide goaltending prospect that they can build around.

Step 1: Draft McEichel

Step 2: Draft a big center with strong defensive play (future 3C) if he is BPA when picking with the other two 1st round picks (NYI and STL) - if not, wait until the 2nd round to pick one up

Step 3: Trade Girgensons or Reinhart for a Gibson or Andersen package from ANA

Step 4: Trade Hodgson for whatever you can get for him

Step 5: Move Ennis and Grigorenko to the wing

NOW, if they somehow play well enough to fall out of contention for McEichel, I think they should target Lawson Crouse to fill their need on the wing.

Ducks still want to win a cup, so they do not make that trade. Hash Tag # 30 not old

My bad I wasn't aware that you needed two starting goaltenders to win a cup

Reinhart and Girgensons are untouchable. They have so many other options to get a solid goaltender.

Hell, if Vancouver wants Grigorenko so much, then Buffalo can trade him for Lack or Markstrom (with other pieces going each way to even the deal).

There was a pretty good discussion on Grigs last week, actually.

(Discussion) Vancouver-Buffalo (Grigorenko)

It's something I've been a fan of doing (for the right price) for at least a year since Grigs has a skill set that none of our other center prospects can quite match - and better size as well. I'd proposed back when I started thinking about it to offer LaBate and McNally. Their value has switched somewhat now, with McNally performing well after the cheating scandal, and LaBate having a mediocre year.

There was some back and forth (with input from our resident Sabres fan) and there was a bit of a consensus that something with Markstrom would work. Higgins was suggested too (once added with Markstrom just for Grigs - no thanks), but would he waive?

Sorry to sound trite, but as he's a good prospect, given the wording of you question, of course. He's a reasonable target.

He may not be available at a decent cost, though.
