A long-haired tabby cat has been hailed a hero after finding an abandoned baby on the street and climbing into the box he had been dumped in to keep him warm.

The compassionate cat then raised the alarm by mewing to draw attention to the baby in the city of Obninsk, western Russia.

Local resident Irina Lavrova, 68, had gone to throw out some garbage when she heard Masha the cat calling loudly near the apartment block.

The stunned pensioner could not believe her eyes when she saw the baby boy lying amongst the trash in a box with Masha next to him.

She said: "Masha is a communal cat who everyone takes turns in looking after.

"She is very placid and friendly so when I heard her mewing I thought that perhaps she had injured herself because normally she would have come and said hello to me.

"You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby. Clearly her mothering instincts had taken over and she wanted to protect the child.

"He was well-dressed with a little hat and whoever left him here had even left a few nappies and some baby food."

After calling an ambulance the three-month-old toddler was taken to hospital where he was given a check up and declared fit and healthy.

A hospital spokesman said: 'The baby had only been outside for a few hours and thanks to Masha and the childs clothing he was not damaged by the experience.'

Now local residents have hailed Masha as a hero.

OAP Irina said: "Everyone in the block is very proud of her and we have all spoilt her rotten by giving her her favourite food."

A police spokesman said they were looking into the case and would try and find the babys mother.

Not only is that cat awesome for saving that baby but she's a beautiful kitty as well, I wonder what breed she is?

I would assume if they found the babies mother they would probably charge her. Seriously sad that someone would abandon a baby like that!

These animals really have amazing instinct. There's a good reason cats are one of the most successful species on the planet. And very diverse living in basically every climate at any level. A creature to be well respected and you will get respect back. What some people don't understand is cats shouldn't be treated like dogs. Basically opposite kind of temperament. If you treat a cat badly it will not like you.

"By the time paramedics responded to take the child to a hospital, Masha had grown protective of him, running after the baby and trying to jump into the ambulance after him, adds Russia Today. Neighbors told the site Masha remained in the road for several hours afterward, apparently waiting for someone to bring the infant back."

Some how i doubt that was the case.

"Surveillance cameras caught the entire incident, which lasted less than a minute, on tape. The boy's father uploaded the footage on YouTube, where the video has gathered nearly four million views as of late Wednesday night."

Regardless of defending family, territory or any reason. At least one feline has performed a duty more important than most humans including yourself I wager. Therefore a simple cat commands more respect than you and more than most people. Impressive no?

Why so serious?

Ironically I have four cats - all rescued....two are mom and son I brought home from New Zealand at my expense the other two from the woods near Squamish..also two rescued dogs....

I still don't like cats....but I'm a sucker for animals...none should suffer....although for more bizarre hipocrosy, I'm a carnivore....go figure

Ftr the cats live downstairs and the dogs wherever they want;)...

What have you done?
