Overzealous Dad Breaks Hockey Glass At Daughter's Youth Tournament

What a dum dum.

Dear Parents,

Please, don't be like Paul. Paul gets a little too "into" his kid's hockey games. He yells at the refs; he bangs on the glass; he shatters the glass singlehandedly before someone interrupts the shocked silence to yell, "WAY TO GO, PAUL."

The above Vine comes from the York Ice Arena in York, Penn., where an overzealous dad apparently named "Paul" shattered the safety glass last weekend at his daughter's youth hockey tournament, prompting referees to pause play while the mess was cleaned up. "This is another unfortunate example of the totally ridiculous obsession of some parents with youth sports," Eric Menzer, who helps manage the rink, told The York Daily Record. According to the Record, the glass broke because the man, who is from Florida, hit the pane with his metal wedding ring, which concentrated the force instead of dispersing it across a broad area. "He broke the (wedding) ring," Menzer added. "Apparently, his hand wasn't in great shape either. Pennsylvania's Fox 43 reports the man had to pay for the broken glass -- potentially as much as $500 -- and has been banned for life from the arena. He'll also face a disciplinary hearing with his daughter's team back home in Florida.

WAY TO GO, PAUL.

Did you hear about the Vancouver Island Minor Hockey Association considering banning parents from games after assaults on refs as young as 12? In one instance they were chased down the hall to the dressing room where they locked themselves in while rabid parents attempted to kick the door down.

Pathetic.

friend of mine works at a local arena here on vancouver island, and i hear stories about the crazed parents alllll the time. this isn't a small thing. it is an almost constant thing, from both mothers and fathers. of course it happens in all sports, but i think hockey attracts at a redneck crowd in particular, especially on van isle, since so many rinks are either in redneck country, or on the cusp of it and civilization

football hooliganism makes anything you're sneering at look like an episode of Glee

On the cusp of civilization eh, lol. Minor hockey on the island is an absolute joke. Parents pay alot of money to put there kid in competitive hockey and the league hires 14 year old referees that have no idea what they are doing to ref a game! and im talking Bantam AA Tier 1 level here. Some of these kids including my younger brother are actually trying to progress and get to a high level of hockey but they can't even play a regular game with the bush league reffing we get around here, we are lucky to see 5 minutes of 5on5 hockey without a penalty being called. A few games ago My brothers team was assessed 64 minutes in penalties..like its a team full of 14 year old Matt Cookes or something..

Many complaints have been made but nothing has been done, if playoff games are decided by the referees I'll have a tuner ready to fire over the glass.

This is exactly the problem, people thinking their kids are gonna make the show and the only thing holding them back is the coaches/refs. If you have a problem with the reffing, get the association to pick up better refs, but abusing young officials is ridiculous.
