Nikita Zadorov suspended by Buffalo Sabers; 'failing to report to the team on time'

Odd.

The Buffalo Sabres suspended defenseman Nikita Zadorov an undisclosed number of games Monday for failing to report to the team on time following the NHL All-Star break.

Monday was the first day teams were allowed to continue with team activities following the break, and Zadorov was not present at the Sabres' practice.

General manager Tim Murray said in a statement that Zadorov is expected to join the team at some point during their upcoming western road trip.

Zadorov, 19, was one of Buffalo's two first-round picks (No. 16 overall) in 2013 along with fellow defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen. The 6-foot-5, 220-pound defenseman has appeared in 34 games this season and scored two goals to go with six assists while averaging close to 20 minutes of ice-time per game.

I'm shocked.

Should be a warning signal for Zadorov. I say Tim Murray's approach on this suspension was definitely a good one.

He's expected to rejoin the team during their road trip and the length of the suspension was not announced. "When you're a 19-year old kid, sometimes if you're not instructed to do things, you know how kids can be sometimes," coach Ted Nolan said. "This will be a big, big learning curve for him. We’ll deal with it when he gets back."

Word is the weather delayed him getting back. Incoming snowstorm on the East Coast will mess with the air travel.

They would have not suspended him if that was the case. I'm just assuming that though. However even if there was a delay, he didn't "report" or tell the Sabres that there was a delay. He's a professional, he needs to let them know and contact them. However we don't even know for sure if it was actually weather that delayed him or something completely different.

Maybe they're just making sure they don't pay him during the time he's failed to report.

Being responsible for a player not reporting on time and then using their non-report as a reason to withhold pay would not look very good on an organization that is going to need to learn how to retain its talent.

I think a decision was made to suspend before all the relevant information was gathered.

Or maybe Zadorov just got confused, since Buffalo has been paying its players to not show up all year.

This I have trouble understanding. Why does it not look very good to not pay someone during the time he doesn't report to work?

Having spent a quarter decade running a business I don't understand why, if an employee didn't make it back from vacation on time, I should have paid him or her.
