(Proposal/Discussion) Vancouver-Edmonton (Nail Yakupov)

Recommended Posts

Edmonton is terrible. They need changes to their team. Every player is available.

Yakupov was a dynamic scoring forward in juniors. What would it take to get him.

Vancouver: G Eddie Lack, RW Zack Kassian, (+?)

Edmonton: RW Nail Yakupov

-Lack has been a decent goaltender for us and held his own last year when we were terrible. Stuck behind Miller for the foreseeable future he can compete and probably take over the starting job from Scrivens. They also have no notable goaltender prospects.

-Edmonton is a notoriously soft team. Kassian if anything gives them toughness and size. He has shown flashes of the player he can be but hasn't been consistent with those flashes. He is still young and has potential to grow into that power forward, however it doesn't seem like he's going to be doing that here. He looks discouraged and needs a change.

-Yakupov has really taken a turn for the worse in his career. His offense has dried up and defensively he's been terrible. However that might just be a product of playing on Edmonton. Vancouver was apparently his favorite team growing up (I remember from his draft year he said this). If we acquire him that might reignite his play.

What do you think? What would it take to get Yakupov? And would acquiring Yakupov be a dumb idea?

I doubt the Oilers would trade Yakupov to a divisional rival. In any case as low as Yakupov's value is right now, he is only 20 years old. I would reject that offer from the Oilers perspective, they can get something better from somewhere else.

Some would argue the Oilers wouldn't want Lack, but I think this is a reasonable proposal.

Unfortunately for both it carries so much risk of a GM looking bad if the player(s) he traded hit their potential and the player(s) acquired don't that it would take two very brave general managers to make the trade.

If Edmonton decides to move Yakupov they'll get better offers than a redundant golie (I believe Scrivens is as good if not better than Lack), a bottom 6 forward who has fallen out of grace with 4 NHL coaches and a mystery +. Yes, Yakupov has struggled mightily but he's a former 1st overall and is only 21. Most of the players from his draft class are still honing their game in the minors. It's far to early to consider him a probably bust

The Oilers traded Sam Gagner to Arizona: a divisional rival. They also traded Smid to Calgary: a divisional rival. ;)

I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Yakupov can still change things around. He'd look good with our next core of players. His minus stat is inflated because he's with a bad team that allows a lot of goals per game. I think he'd fit well with our top 6 if we gave him a chance. He's got a helluva lot more potential than Kassian, and I think a trade between rivals is what is needed to amp up our organization.

I'd do that deal in a minute, and immediately ship Nail off to Utica and have Travis Green teach him the fundamentals of being an NHL player for the rest of the year and let him regain his confidence.

I think last half of the season in AHL and he'd come to camp a completely different player and show why he was first overall.

I don't think he's eligible. He'd have to clear waivers.. Because he's played over 150 games in the NHL, and so I think there is a certain number of NHL starts and once you exceed that number of games played, you are eligible to waivers.

Someone confirm this please and thank you :)

EDIT: If you played in the NHL as an 18 year old and you have played in the NHL for 160 games played, you are then eligible for waivers. Yakupov has 159 games played. We need to trade for him now, and send him to Utica the next day or he will be waiver eligible. If we decided to send him down once he's waiver eligible, he'll for sure get claimed.

You might be right, which is really unfortunate. He was rushed into the NHL, should have been sent back to Junior for another year to refine his game.

Needs to be brought into a really strong group where he can be allowed to develop and see if he can get back on track to be a first line winger again.

How many 1st round picks has Edmonton killed in the last 10 years by rushing them?

i doubt edmonton moves him to us, more likelyhood they trade him to calgary I would really like Yakupov on our team. Speed, skill and an exciting player to watch who looks like he is having fun when scoring and playing well(yes been a while) But that excitement can be contagious, i wouldnt mind seeing our players get jacked up and pumped for scoring that also gets the crowd more involved too. Id try to acquire him, but im sure they would be wanting horvat back

Im not sure why Calgary would want him, or what they would give up to get him. I don't think Yak is a good fit for Vancouver either. Yak would be best suited to a speedy eastern team, NYI, Tampa, Pittsburgh, and Montreal come to mind. Even Toronto, who play a more wide open style game could be a destination he could have success in, and, TO could possibly unload Phaneuf in return.

I don't think Yak belongs in the west at all though, and I think in Vancouver he would just perform to the same level he has thus far in Edmonton.

Don't see him fitting in here. And going by WD's propensity to give vet players more opportunities I can see him getting frustrated here.

If we are trading with Edmonton, I say Lack and Higgins for either Martin Marincin or Oscar Klefbom.

If we added say a 2nd that package could probably get Yakupov IMO. A good two-way gritty forward which Edmonton needs as well as a good young goalie. The pick sweetens it.
