(Proposal) Canucks-Islanders, Canucks-Colorado

Recommended Posts

First Trade.

Van- Tanev, Higgins, 3rd round pick.

Colorado- Ryan O'Riely

Why Colorado does this:

Been heavily speculated ROR is on the market to upgrade Colorado's defence. Tanev brings a stabilizing responsible defence that resembles a younger Hamhuis and will improve Colorado's shots on goal against. Tanev is 6'2 and 25, so mesh's well with their young culture helping them be a contender for years to come and he likely hasn't hit his peak yet. Higgins will provide veteran presence to a young team, good on the Pk, and offer secondary scoring.

I imagine their defence would look something like - Tanev Johnson

Hejda Barrie

Why Canucks do this:

Canucks need to shake up their roster and do not have the offence and consistency to be a strong contender this year. Making a move for ROR certainly does not hurt Canucks chances as he is able to fill the second line centre spot well, and make the second line more of a threat to the opposition. Another strong reason for this trade that works out for both teams is ROR is only 23 and bolsters BOTH our current goals to be a contender now, and a contender in the next few years when the likes of our younger prospects can step in. With the Sedin's aging and on a slow decline he puts us closer to where we need to be now, allowing us to utilize the talent of the Sedin's while they're still top line players and this veteran core can still make a stab at the cup.

Imagine their lines to look like- Sedin Sedin Vrbata

Burrows ROR Bonino

Second Trade.

Van- Bieska, Sbisa, Gaunce (possibly McCann), 2nd round pick

New york - Reinhart

Why New York does this:

With the addition of Bieska and Sbisa, this makes New york a stronger contender for the Cup as Bieska provides a veteran presence with playoff experience, toughness, grit, and true leadership to a young and upcoming team. Sbisa as well bolsters up their defence and is only 24 with room to grow on a young team with good size and can step in occasionally if toughness is needed from the back end. Gaunce would likely serve as a strong concrete 3rd line player in few years, with a mobile big body that would compliment the likes of some of their more offensive talent, being Dal Colle, Strome, Lee, Tavares etc.

Why Reinhart is expendable: Islanders have had some emphasis on defenceman in the past drafts and currently have 3 of their top 4 defenceman under 24 years old, and young defenceman prospects like Pulock who was drafted 15th overall providing not alot of Room for Reinhart to step in.

Why Canucks do this- It could be argued that Bieska's greatest asset currently is his leadership and toughness and although we give this up, we get a great young Dman in return that could hopefully step in now and serve as a top 4 player. Sbisa has been up and down this year but at times has showed promise to his game and therefore now and in the future provides value to a team looking to make a deep playoff run. With Gaunce and McCann one of the two is expendable since we have depth of centres in our system, preferably Gaunce. Reinhart almost made the team last year, and was going to make the team this year if it wasn't for the addition of Leddy and Boychuk. This would work for both Reinhart and NY as he deserves to be playing in the NHL and deserves a fair chance elsewehere due to the islanders current depth at defence. Reinhart has the size teams desire especially in the western conference and is what the canucks are in desperate need for as a shutdown eventually top pairing young Dman that also has room to grow offensively and has showed his leadership traits leading the Oil kings. This gives the Canucks a different look at defence, but one that is okay now, but will be alot stronger in the future, fitting in with our rebuild very well. Reinhart is a piece the future of the Canucks need to be successful.

Canucks lines look like Edler Corrado

Hamhuis Reinhart

and in 3 years... Edler Reinhart

Hamhuis Corrado.

I know its a massive leap pairing corrado with edler, but he has played well thus far. Also it is more likely Benning would likely want to explore acquiring a top 4 defenceman via trade of picks, or free agency. This defensive core might not look threatning now, but would be very strong in a few years.

I know that stated defence could use a few tweaks to be stronger now, but putting emphasis on the future too canucks start to have a great new young look, with the talented players in place to be a great team down the road.

You realized we are also getting long in the tooth in the back end too right. And you want to get rid of Tanev? If Benning wasn't going to give up his 24th pick in the draft in McCann,Why would he give him him up now? He's one of the top five hockey IQ in the game. Benning is one of the best scouts in the game. And is one of the reasons the Canucks hired this guy. Just because we have a bunch of centres doesn't mean you can't make them into wingers. Linden played some of his career as a winger.

Throwing away our roster like the suggestions you've made does not translate into a shakeup of the roster. Too many pieces given up for 2 pieces that may or may not help us. Will Reinhart really be that much better than Tanev, Bieksa, AND Sbisa? Will ROR be that much better than Higgins to warrent us giving up on a couple of picks and prospects?

Trade 1-O'Reilly for Tanev, Higgins, 3rd

It's really hard to analyze this one because of the contracts involved.

O'Reilly has another year after this one at a salary of $6.2 million, cap hit of $5.8 million, and then he'll be an UFA. His past contract negotiations have been really difficult and it would not be at all surprising to see him test the UFA waters.

Tanev will be an UFA this summer unless re-signed by then.

Higgins is on a modified ntc and as far as I'm aware the details aren't available to the public so we don't know how much security he has. He bought a house in West Van a few months ago, his wife is pregnant and he's indicated he wants to stay in Vancouver.

As far as player value is concerned, it might be ok but one might think the Canucks need a top d-man more than a top centre. Tanev might be more important to the Canucks than O'Reilly, though no doubt O'Reilly's trade value is the higher of the two.

Proposal 2-Bieska, Sbisa, Gaunce (possibly McCann), 2nd round pick to NYI for Griffin Reinhart.

This also has a contract issue as Bieksa has a full ntc and has previously indicated he wants to stay with the Canucks. He is also injured and will be injured at the time of the trade deadline.

If the deal were possible I think this is overpayment by the Canucks. I also think our roster at this point would be gutted by this and previous proposal. Ignoring the picks for the moment, the 1st two proposals move 4 roster players (1 forward, 3 defencemen) and a prospect for 1 roster forward and a prospect. On defence that would leave Hamhuis, Edler, Weber, Stanton and Corrado. Possible additions would be Sanguinetti, Biega and the newly acquired Reinhart. That looks really thin.

I also think it definitely goes against statements from Canucks management that they have the goal of making the playoffs.

Tanev still has RFA status after this year though, at least I am pretty sure. Regardless though Colorado needs a LHD coming back for O'Reilly. They will want Edler more than Tanev.

The second trade is your typical quantity for quality. The Isles don't need any more defenseman. They have CDH-Hamonic, Boychuk-Leddy and Hickey-Lubo. That is a damn good defense, there is no need for upgrades. I don't see the Isles dealing for anyone signficant this year. Lubo will leave this summer so they might possibly want someone then but imo they will let their young defenseman play for that spot instead.

I think we overpay on both. Mcann has a higher ceiling then ror imo and gaunce may end up not far off. also kills our depth at centre. Tanev and reinhart are both stay at home types and I think he is overrated and has been passed by in the pecking order by the like of pulock. also keep in mind that tanev has been the perfect partner for edler. I like ror but maybe for cdorrado and a 1st in 2016 and a throw in like higgins but i wouldnt sell the farm for either of these guys.
