(Rumour) [LeBrun] SJS: Listening to deals for Niemi

The San Jose Sharks woke up Tuesday morning seven points clear of the danger zone in the Western Conference, but don’t think for a second that general manager Doug Wilson will deviate from what he’s started.

Just because the Sharks currently sit in a playoff spot, I don’t think you’ll see that process change; Wilson will listen on his pending unrestricted free agents, which includes starting goalie Antti Niemi.

Niemi’s future in San Jose is unclear at best, his agent Markus Lehto telling ESPN.com via email from Europe on Monday that there haven’t been any discussions with the Sharks about an extension.

I don’t really see any of those top teams needing a top goalie at this point. Obviously injuries can change the script, but right now, I think Niemi likely stays put in part because I don’t view a real market for him.

If the Canucks continue to free-fall in the standings, I think the Miller experiment ends at the trade deadline. Miller to SJ makes too much sense. He's signed for a couple more years after this which gives them time to groom Stalock or find another option.

=== Opinion ===

SJS

Miller

Shinkaruk/Jensen

VAN

Niemi (walks as UFA)

Hertl

2015 1st (becomes 2nd round pick if Niemi re-signs prior to the draft)

Van stocks up on another 2015 1st round pick, add Hertl, and can either re-sign Niemi or more likely lets him walk via UFA.

SJS gets a good #1 goalie for the remainder of this season + 2 more and a B grade prospect. Miller waives to be with his wife, and a team with a better shot at doing something in the playoffs.

lmao yes to that deal in a second, if Wilson does that though he'd be fired as quickly as I'd accept the deal.

^Had suggested this idea two weeks back, yet I'd simplify the transaction.

Van sends Miller(retain 1 mill, if necc).

SJ sends a conditional 2015 1st. If they don't qualify for PO's, change to 2015 2nd & 2016 3rd.

No point in keeping Niemi..try to flip him for a late pick, if possible. Run with Lack/Markstrom to wind up the season.

We'd gain some picks & open 5 mill cap space, this summer.

If I remember things correctly, Miller "settled" for Vancouver, though his first choice was SJS in the off season. I guess SJS was undecided as to what their plan was, so perhaps he signed here so as to have as much exposure to the SJS brass.

If JB can in any way shape or form turn Miller into Hertl, it would be a major step forward to rebuilding this team. Imagine a line of Hertl - Horvat - Virtanen

Only reason Benning would amuse a Miller trade would be if he believes Lack can be a dependable #1 and that Markstrom can be a dependable #2.

I'd honestly be for it as it would shore up some money for a UFA top 6 forward but highly doubt the return would be Hertl

Or if he believes Miller's value is at its highest, and this team isn't going to go deep this year.

Not sure SJ would part with Hertl. Maybe Goldobin?
