SabreFan1
Ted Nolan has realized he was the sacrificial lamb and scapegoat for the current team rebuild. Hence he is telling some Sabres players to play well enough so they get traded away from the team. I've never heard of a coach who has ever told any of his players that before. Can you say Gong Show- Buffalo Sabres style?! I'm wondering who the soon to be sucker coach will be in a week or so. Murray has to be pretty peeved by this. FYI: The Sabres are taking his advice. They scored 3 goals 90 minutes ago in the first period of tonight's game against a pretty good Montreal team... http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2015/02/03/nolan-tells-trade-candidates-to-play-way-off-sabres/ The Buffalo Sabres have lost 14 games in a row and haven’t even earned a single consolation point over that span. To say they’re not making the playoffs would be redundant as we knew that well before their slide started. For some of their players though, there’s still hope: They could be picked up by another team. It’s gotten to the point where coach Ted Nolan is using that as motivation for players, per the Buffalo News’ John Vogl. “Maybe somebody will see you and want you,” Nolan said. That sums up the state of the Sabres about as well as anything could. It’s not far off in principle from motivating young AHLers to play hard in the hopes that their NHL club might want them. Buffalo has a number of potential trade candidates, including forwards Chris Stewart, Drew Stafford, and Torrey Mitchell and defenseman Andrej Meszaros. Then there’s Tyler Myers, who could command a sizable sum if the Sabres agree to part ways with him. He’s also one guy Nolan doesn’t want to see go anywhere. “He’s one of the bright spots on this team,” Nolan told the Buffalo News. “When you go through a rebuilding and restocking of the organization, some of the pieces you keep and you surround them. Tyler Myers is one of those guys you build your team around. “Very rarely do you see a 6-foot-8 guy who can skate like a 5-foot-8 guy. He’s been tremendous for us all season long.” So if Nolan gets his way, Myers won’t be able to play his way off of the team. For the rest of the squad though…

It's one thing to remain as a fan of your team - nobody wants to see their team lose and for so long. But it's another thing to be able to laugh at your own team. Sabres have some good players, but for some reason, it just hasn't worked out. Oh well, a potential franchise player can help that team out in a year or two. Apple Juice
Honestly, if I were stuck on a team that stunk this badly, I would want to be traded out just by showing up every game as much as possible and work my butt off to get out. If David Perron could get out of the avalanche of a mess in Edmonton, I'm sure others in Buffalo can find a way out too.

You both must have the same philosophy when it comes to playing the game.

SabreFan1
Good grief. The Canadiens got beat, 3-2. There goes the losses in a row record. Looks like the players are taking Nolan's advice.

SabreFan1
Nolan needs to shut it before he gets black-marked for another decade. I think he came to terms a couple of weeks ago about his NHL coaching career. He knows he will never get hired again. He nearly said so during a presser. etsen3
I have a feeling he was saying it tongue-in-cheek/sarcastically. If not though, that's the definition of a man who's given up.
BanTSN
So are we supposed to feel sorry for Nolan or the Sabres as they wind up their McEichel hunt?
SabreFan1
I have a feeling he was saying it tongue-in-cheek/sarcastically. If not though, that's the definition of a man who's given up. He was serious. He has always been a player-centric coach. It's not as much given up as it is Nolan being resigned to his fate. He realizes that he'll be lucky to last the rest of the season and also knows that he's done forever as an NHL coach. He may as well be honest and forth-rite with the locker room while he still can. SabreFan1
So are we supposed to feel sorry for Nolan or the Sabres as they wind up their McEichel hunt? Heck no. The Sabres players have been shooting themselves in the foot for most of the season. They give less than their best almost every time they step on the ice. Nolan still has 2 years left on his multi-million dollar contract so when he's fired and fully bought out, he will be very comfortable. The McEichel prize is pretty much the prize for the fans and the GM. Most of the vets on the current roster won't be with the Sabres 2-3 years from now. Gorges is said to be trade bait now and he's only been with the team for several months.
