Magikal
http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2015/02/wine-beer-tapas-starbucks-canada-this-year/ Starbucks Canada revealed this week plans to expand their offerings to include nighttime wine, beer, and tapas service in select locations, custom fizzy drinks, delivery, and more. On the other side of the border last year, Starbucks launched their “Evenings” program, which found thousands of their stores breaking out the wine, beer, and savoury nibbles after 4 p.m. In an interview with the Toronto Star, Starbucks Canada president Rossann Williams confirmed a similar program will be rolled out in locations in Toronto and “other big cities” in the country “by the end of the year.” The alcohol menu will be limited to beer and wine, and the tapas will include selections like flatbreads, olives, nuts, and cheese. Williams also dropped some hints about what other changes are afoot this year for Starbucks. Custom-order carbonation for Teavana teas and juices starting this summer New food items debuting in B.C. starting March 3 Starbucks Delivery…if it works well in the U.S. Mobile pay-and-order option that will let customers pay ahead and skip the line at pick-up For Vancouverites who want to order a glass of wine and a latte in a coffee shop setting, Whole Foods on Cambie recently launched their Allegro Café, which is the only cafe of its kind in the city; they start pouring beer and vino at 9 a.m. I guess Rogers Arena won't be the only place to buy an $9.00 beer in Vancouver soon. I wonder how this is going to impact local stores and restaurants if people who want to go out for a drink are marching over to the local Starbucks instead of a bar/restaurant/etc. The even more important question is what kind of beer they will be offering. Craft brews or garbage like Budweiser and Canadian.

Warhippy
Of course they'll integrate a major corporate label in, that way there is associated price sharing. As well it alllows a corporate twinning of "iced booze drinks" from said beer distributor. I personally see NO way this can cause any issues at all. No underage drinking issues or problems with public intoxication. Concealed liquor? No officer it's just a REALLY strong espresso drink I swear. Why does it taste like that? Pfft it's starbucks duh everything they make tastes like sh*t pressed through a sock. Again, the slow Americanization of Canada continues. I say this as a well traveled adult who has lived in multiple provinces in Canada as well as in a few different states. The Canada I grew up in looks more and more like a satellite state every day that goes by over the last decade

Warhippy
They will I.D people like anywhere else and I doubt they will serve alcohol in their traditional to-go cups. The issue is Starbucks own success. Ever gone into a starbucks at lunch or a weekend? 10-15 people inline in a fast food scenario. The absolute slowdown of service to ID everyone questionable will not sit well and quite a lot of drinks will go out just because they A: couldn't be bothered to check because it's to busy or B: Because management has quotas to fill and the resulting slowdown in production and sales will not translate into profits thus bringing down regional directors etc. I mean it's inevitable and it's going to happen on a very regular basis. Besides...have you SEEN the kids that they're putting out today? 14 years old looking 25. Even when I bartended I'd have had a hard time believing the ages of some of the kids these days

Lots of cafes already have liquor licenses (have you ever been to a Wired Monk?), not to mention countless restaurants and other places that accept underage patrons. Most kids who drink under-aged aren't going to go to Starbucks to do it, at least I never would have lol. They're going to use a fake/boot and get cheap beer/booze and go get smashed at a house party. I've only been able to legally buy alcohol in BC for almost two years, and drinking in a Starbucks environment doesn't appeal to me now, and it definitely wouldn't have then either. If underagers want alcohol, they're going to find a way to get it regardless of Starbucks. (What an odd sentence).

Also, alcoholic drinks will obviously be served in different cups (glassware that cannot be taken "to go"), as to go alcohol violates so many laws it's not even funny. Even when I bartended I'd have had a hard time believing the ages of some of the kids these days the people at the cash register already ask for ID for credit cards, and their speed of taking orders really doesn't matter since everyone needs to wait for the drinks to be made after they are ordered anyway. Langdon Algur
So they need to serve Tapa's in order to be considered a restruant to get a food primary license I'm guessing.
brilac
Starbucks serves wine and beer at some of the locations in Seattle. I've drank there a few times. The last time I drank there, I found it odd how each time I finished a glass of wine, that I had to get up and walk over to the counter, and stand in line to order another glass of wine. I prefer to have my wine served to me instead of getting up and standing in line for another glass. When Starbucks first got into the wine business, it was nice when they were serving wines from Chateau Ste Michelle, but now I am not sure what they serve, plus it is kind of pricey for a small glass of wine, and the dessert selections are not that great. Lancaster
I wouldn't mind having some liquor coffee late night after watching the movies or having a nice dinner with the missus. Not sure would Starbucks be the first place that pops into our mind, considering there are quite a few other restaurants, specialty shops and piano lounges that can probably provide better ambiances. But then again.... getting reward stars from Starbucks will always be a plus.
