How Many of our Goals Are by "New" Canucks?

Canucks for Stanley Cup

Nice work. I was thinking about similar things. I also wonder how this compares with other teams. I am not going to do the work but I am guessing that even the 38.6% number for this year is on the low side compared to other teams. The youth movement will need to continue.

I too wondered how this compares with other teams. As of this morning, from hockey-reference.com, I totalled up goals by players shown on hockey-reference.com at 27 or younger and divided by total goals for the team. I did the Atlantic and Pacific divisions only, not spending the time to the Metro or Central. Arizona's % will drop Feb 20 as Hanzal's 8 goals will come off when he attains the age of 28.

Atlantic Division Pacific Division

Montreal 95/142= 66.9% Ana 88/159= 55.3%

TBL 130/182= 71.4% SJ 80/160= 50.0%

Det 82/158= 51.9% Van 59/153= 38.6%

Bos 74/142= 52.1% Calg 86/159= 54.1%

Fl 82/129= 63.6% LA 75/151= 49.7%

Ott 109/149= 73.2% Az 69/125= 55.2% (48.8% without Hanzal)

Tor 88/157= 56.1% Edm 84/127= 66.1%

Buf 69/97 = 71.1%

It's pretty clear Vancouver suffers the effects of a huge shortage of players in their prime scoring years. Canucks % of goals from players 27 and under, is higher than last season but way, way lower than any other team in the Atlantic or Pacific division.

That suggests that while the transition to younger players is underway, there was and remains a very long way to go.

Great work. This analysis confirms the impressions that many of us have had. And it looks very much like it will be a couple of years before we can expect a significant improvement on this dimension.

One read on the Canuck strategy is that JB will rely on the vets (the Sedins especially) to keep the team respectable while trying to rebuild through the draft and by moves of the type he already undertaken (Vey, Pedan, Clendenning etc.)

It would be easier to rebuild if we did not worry about being respectable for a couple of years and got higher draft picks and more draft picks by trading away rentals, but I understand the pressures, including the financial pressures, to stay competitive enough to at least compete seriously for a playoff spot.

Let's hope Benning can pull it off.

Makes you wonder why the second unit power play doesn't have the likes of horvat, kassian and matthias as a group, hell, throw kennins in there too, and put Kass on the point as a pp quarterback... There ya go, a pp that can score..

"Kass on the point as a pp quarterback " k let's try that.

Gets feed from down low puck hops over stick. By the time he is done turning around the puck is already in our net for a shorthanded goal. Tries to take a shot gets blocked and he turns it over resulting in a chance for the other team.

Disaster waiting to happen

With 14 days to trading deadline an 13 more losses to count out our next 5 games will decide the fate of some of the players on the team except the core .It is great to see young guns comming in an contributing to the team.Really looking forward to the day Virtanen, maccann ,join this team down the road

With Edler possibly out for a while it could shift what JB searches for a bit. I just hope he keeps on keeping on with what he has been stating all year: keeping our 1st, keeping our youth. Unless of course there is some offer he can't possibly refuse.

It's also important to note that we are still the 12 oldest team in the league according to http://stats.nhlnumbers.com/teams

Those numbers are a little surprising, but also tell us things that most Canuck fans have known for a while too, like we haven't drafted well, or traded well enough to implement numbers of talented youth into the lineup on a regular basis. Still though, that's 1/2 of the league you assessed and we're at the bottom rung for goals scored by < 27's.

Nice job. If I get time later I'll round out the Western Conference by looking at the Central Division.

edit: Boy seeing how we compare to other teams makes last season look even worse than it already was at < %30. Yikes.
