Sitting atop the NHL standings, the Nashville Predators made a major trade on Sunday to solidify their lineup and make a strong push for the Stanley Cup.

The 2015 NHL Trade Deadline isn’t until March 2,

but that doesn’t mean the Predators are remaining silent in the meantime.

Nashville General Manager David Poile acquired two former members of the Predators organization, defenseman Cody Franson and forward Mike Santorelliof the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forward Olli Jokinen, prospect Brendan Leipsic and a 2015 first-round draft choice.

In a moment, the GM was able to make a championship-contending team even more dynamic and he did it without giving any major pieces on a Preds team that is primed for a deep playoff run.

And so it begins....

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced Sunday that the team has acquired defenseman Cody Franson and forward Mike Santorelli from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Nashville’s first-round selection in the 2015 Draft, and forwards Brendan Leipsic and Olli Jokinen.

“In preparation for the 2015 playoff run, our goal was to add a veteran defenseman who could play in all situations and a proven forward who could move up and down lineup based on the situation,” Poile said. “We were fortunate to do this in the same transaction with players who are in the prime of their careers more than two weeks before the Trade Deadline in order to give them more time to contribute and gel with their teammates.

“Both Cody and Mike were drafted, developed and began their NHL careers here. They know our organization and still have former teammates and friends on the roster. We are fully confident that they will seamlessly fit into our team.

Franson, 27 (8/8/87), was selected by the Predators 78th overall (third round) in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and was a member of the 2010-11 Nashville club along with current Preds Shea Weber, Colin Wilson, Mike Fisher and Pekka Rinne, that won the first playoff series in franchise history.

“Cody brings size, offensive ability and the capacity to play in all situations to our lineup,” Poile said. “He is the perfect component to round out our defensive corps and give us eight proven NHL defensemen.”

Santorelli, 29 (12/14/85), was selected 178th overall (sixth round) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, 80 picks and two rounds before the Predators selected Rinne. The 6-0, 190-pound forward posted a 20-goal, 41-point season with the Florida Panthers in 2010-11, and has 29 points (11g-18a) and a +7 rating in 57 games for Toronto in 2014-15.

“Mike is a versatile player that can move up and down the lineup based on the situation,” Poile said. “He has fantastic speed, is excellent in the face-off circle, and can play all three forward positions if called upon. He is an excellent complement to our existing group of forwards.”

This is a huge step for the Predators who hope to do some damage in this years playoffs!

Preds just flying under the radar. Franson and Santo gonna be huge for their playoff push. Props to Nashville, they have an unbelievable team and I have them as favourites in the West.

Good for TO as well. Kick starting the rebuild, get a 1st for Franson when they acquired him for like a 5th or something lol.

good return for 2 pending ufa's. one of which probably just goes to the highest bidder as a ufa. so franson is nothing more than a rental i would think. 4 solid rhd on their team now weber jones franson ellis Santorelli if he does well will probably be retained he wants some stability

Nothing coming back to the Laffs but a top 28 pick

Jokinen($2.5M) is UFA next season and Liepsic is a small 5'9" fwd in the "Dub" in Portland

I thought Franson and Santo would draw much more

Poille must have thrown in a box of donuts to Nonis to swing the deal!

The rich get richer. The Predators have a very deep D-core with Franson. Santo is no slouch either - he's not going to be a superstar but he was a solid player when he was here and has played well in TO also. He's a reasonable 3rd line option over Calle Jarnkrok, is a good faceoff man and is versatile enough to play wing in a pinch, up and down the line-up to boot.

Nashville's 1st rounder is the real "prize" for TO imo. Everyone keeps talking about how this is a deep draft year so even if Nashville wins the cup, the 1st rounder should still hold quite a bit of value. I don't know much about Leipsic though.

Will be interesting to see if TO can trade Jokinen... I can't see him having much value at this point in his career and with his performance this season.
