(Proposal) Van-Tor Blockbuster (Long read)

Recommended Posts

Trade 1:

To Van: James Van Riemsdyk, Tyler Bozak, Morgan Reilly, and a 2015 4th

To Tor: Jannick Hansen, Chris Higgins, Nick Bonino, Luca Sbisa, Frank Corrado, Jared Mccann, Nicklas Jensen, 2015 1st, and 2016 2nd

Trade 2:

To Van: 2015 2nd round pick

To Philly: Eddie Lack and Yannick Weber

I know for a fact that ever one of you would comment saying this is the most unrealistic trade ever and you can't trade quality for quantity and why are you ruining our prospect pool and stuff like that. Try looking at this trade as 3 individual ones:

JVR for Hansen, Mccann, Jensen and a 1st

Bozak and a 4th for Bonino and Higgins

Reilly for Sbisa, Corrado and a 2nd

I love all our prospects, but if we could get Bozak, JVR and Reilly coming our way, I see no issues sending them a couple picks and prospects as well. Remember, Reilly is 20, JVR is 25 and Bozak is 28. JVR is enteringarrow-10x10.png his prime while Bozak is in the middle of his and Reilly is barely out of his teenage years. The only real good prospect we give up is Mccann, which I think is expendable since we already have Horvat, Gaunce and Cassels as our 2/3 line centres. Jensen has struggled in the last few years in the AHL, but he's still a former 1st rounder and a decent B level prospect. I think Higgins could waive to be closer to his home town. Toronto would want them because of their veteran leadership skills and also some offense to replace Bozak and JVR

:sigh: Stop worrying about what you think we'll say and actually look at why it's unrealistic.

The very first issue I see related to why people say you can't trade quantity for quality is that teams have a 50 contract limit. We give them 7 contracts but take back only 3. That means the Leafs have 4 more contracts now than when they started. For someone that follows their moves closely, that would be a reminder that they dumped a couple contracts recently (Ashton) just to make some room in that 50 contract limit, but they aren't going to fill it back up with the pieces we offer.

Then you have to consider the quality of the players they give up. Do we offer them anyone that can step into those roles in the near future or are so attractive from a prospect perspective that they would give up NHL talent right now? Maybe McCann they'd be interested in, and Bonino and Bozak would have similar value, but Corrado or Sbisa doesn't replace Rielly (his future potential for then is big) and Jensen isn't JVR. Hansen and Higgins are just extra bottom 6 players for them, even if they're good, so that doesn't really entice them either when they're moving to a rebuild.

What boggles the mind even further is the second trade was probably pretty close to an NHL deal. How you go from something so crazy as the first deal to something like the second I don't know.
