Rumour: TSN Radio - Habs trading for Patrick Sharp

Recommended Posts

Sharp has a Cap hit of $5.9M for 2 more seasons after this one

Oops my bad... Sorry with the death of cap geek I was just guessing. He's only 32... 5.9 cap hit.

Wow I'd love it if JB landed him... Imagine that second line... Or any line with sharp.

For all those undervaluing sharp he would be the canucks best forward. He's a stud in the playoffs, defensive specialist and puts up great offensive numbers. No way Chicago moves him before the playoff push.

I don't think it is a question of undervaluing his worth; rather the situation where they are up against it with the cap limit and Sharp represents the most value in return they can get whilst shedding the optimum amount of salary. Lets face it, doubtful anyone wants Versteeg or Hossas contracts - they are not bad players, they just don't represent super value with their contracts which so many gm's are seeking these days with fluctuating cap speculation.

Um, no.

- For one, Sedins > Sharp. No question. It may not have looked like it last year when the twins were struggling/injured and Sharp was potting 34 goals, but Patrick has declined since.

- Secondly, if Sharp is a "defensive specialist", why does he average 0:01 of shorthanded TOI per game?

- And third, he has 1 point in his last 8 games, and has been barely over 13:00 the last couple of games (both wins). He doesn't seem to be crucial to their success.

Sharp is a good player, but if Chicago needs to trade from a position of strength to shore up a weakness, dealing a winger for a center is probably not a bad idea.

Since half of Versteeg's contract is covered by Florida, he's pretty damn good value for a 2.2 million cap hit. Hawks are going to hang on to him.

And Hossa is still one of the best players in the league, and should be effective for another couple of years. No way they trade him while their in "win-now" mode. At the end of the season though...maybe. That may reduce future cap recapture penalties (since he has one more year at 7.9, then 4, then four years at 1 million or less!).

Funny how people call cap recapture a "Luongo rule", when Hossa's backdiving contract is sooo much more aggregious.

Patrick Sharp has 3 goals at even strength this season.

15 even strength assists.

-10 with some of the most opportune minutes on the Hawks to this point.

He's 33 years old with a 5.9 million cap hit for two more seasons.

Queneville is skating him on the fourth line presently.

I don't see how folks around here consider Eller and Tinordi a great deal for the Habs.

Chicago is not dealing from a position of strength here - that is far too much risk for the Habs to take imo, and far too much young value to be parting with - not to mention that they are perenially criticized for weighting their forward group this way.

I don't like the look of their lineup without Eller - he makes life easier for their top 6.

If they were to acquire Sharp, I think they should keep the likes of Eller out of the discussion and offer more marginal futures.

They'd be helping the Hawks with a cap bind as it is - Toews and Kane will be costing them an additional 8 million in cap hit next year, while Saad, Kruger, Rundblad and Erixon are all RFAs. Oduya is their most significant expiring contract.

This is where you squeeze the Hawks - you do not throw a couple premier young assets at them.

Are we still on this one? From Friedman's 30 thoughts this week:

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/30-thoughts-nhl-trade-deadline-2015-rumours/

6. When last season ended, Bergevin had high praise for Lars Eller. He pointed out how the Canadiens were wiped out by Ottawa after he was injured in 2013, then went to the Eastern Conference final with the centre healthy in 2014 — one point behind P.K. Subban for the team’s playoff scoring lead.

“I have a saying,” Bergevin said. “There are players who get you in and players who get you through. Lars gets you through. When the chips are down, and the games are big, Lars is at his best.”

Montreal is searching for size, especially up front. He’s a bigger player. Said one exec, “I have no idea why they would want to trade Lars Eller.”

Now, Sharp's no slouch, but Eller is a big 2-way center that performs in the playoffs. I don't think Montreal is looking to move him any time soon, nor Tinordi with his size considering the Habs are still a small team.
