Arizona Wins Lottery (Proposal)

Recommended Posts

Per say, Arizona wins the NHL Draft Lottery.

They have Dvorak and Domi already. Should they find a way to get Marner?

Right now, Carolina has the fourth overall pick and that would be the best place to pick up Marner. (Behind Mcdvaid Eichel and Hanifin)

Would this trade interest both teams?

Arizona:

4th Overall (Marner)

Haydn Fleury (Previous 7th Overall)

2nd round pick (34th Overall)

Carolina:

1st Overall (McDavid)

1st overall pick for Crosby. Calling it now.

New Crosby > Old Crosby

Fresh start, no concussion history, entry level contract...

I'm not saying McDavid will necessarily be as good or better than Sid - just that for a rebuilding team he's more valuable.

Paris defender, perhaps it is easier to get an idea of the value of McDavid by noting the Lindros trade.

Lindros was traded to to the Flyers on June 30, 1992 for

$15 million cash, Ron Hextall, Peter Forsberg, Steve Duchesne, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Chris Simon and 1993 and 1994 first round picks, each of which turned out to be #10 overall.

Hextall was a 28 year old goalie who had previously won the Vezina and Conn Smythe trophies and been a 1st team all star. Forsberg was the 6th overall pick in the first round in 1991 and went on to a Hall of Fame career. Duchesne was a 27 year old defencemen who had already played in 2 all star games. Mike Ricci was a two-way center who was the 4th overall pick in the 1st round in 1990 and had scored 41 and 56 pts in the seasons after he was drafted and had a 17 season career. Chris Simon was a LW, 2nd round pick in 1990 who played in the NHL until 2008. Huffman was a defenceman who had been drafted in the 1st round in 1986 and had a 10 year career as a depth defenceman.

So, those players, plus 2 1st rounders at #10 overall each and $15 million in 1992 dollars, trades involving cash still being permitted at the time.

I'm not saying the 2015-1st overall will fetch the same, but that would make a reasonable starting point for discussion.

More likely, Arizona would simply refuse to move McDavid. The Nordiques didn't trade Lindros until he'd sat out his draft + 1 year refusing to sign with them.
